Last week we featured London?s?Rita Catolino, and during her interview, she made strong mention of her coach Renee Primeau stating ?She?played a HUGE role in setting me up for success in that show, and the ones that have followed. I couldn?t have done it without her.?
Like any good website would, we wanted to know more about the woman whom Rita credited for helping transform her physique into what you saw last week. What we found is the credit Rita was giving her coach Renee was extremely warranted, as Primeau not only coaches Catolino, but many other big names in the fitness world, and is also a Personal Trainer & Holistic Lifestyle Coach.
It?s no secret we take pride in featuring some of the best that London, Ontario has to offer. While most students at Western U (Downtown London) may not be familiar with Fitness Forum (Southwest London), if any of them, or anyone else in London and surrounding areas, are taking the next step into the world of fitness, it?d be highly recommended they check it out.
Renee?works out of Fitness Forum a few days a week, with in-person clientele. The rest of the week, she works from home with distance based and local clientele. Anyone interested can reach her by emailing?renee@reneeprimeau.com.?Having?coached numerous high level physique competitors and fitness models (including regular Oxygen Magazine featured models, Regional, Provincial and Nationally level ranked competitors) you know you?ll be getting?great quality coaching.
Renee is also a fitness model herself doing print work for physique competitor geared training wear; workout shoots that have been featured in various online articles; ads and promotions for fitness related companies; and modeling for fine art and art gallery projects for gallery pieces.
We took the time to speak with Renee and asked her everything from what led her stay in London, to why she took a step back from competing in order to coach high some level of competitors, whom she was competing with. We asked about her diet, what being a holistic lifestyle coach means to her, and just about everything else we could think of.
Check it out below. It?s a must read for anyone in the fitness world.

Interview with Renee
Who are you?
My name is Renee Primeau. I was raised in Glencoe, Ontario. We also lived in a couple surrounding areas- our farm in Appin and a house in Wardsville. These are small towns that contain between 400 and just over 2000 people.
I have now lived in London, Ontario around 10 years.
I am a Personal Trainer, Holistic Lifestyle Coach (both online and in person) and have taken part in Physique Competitions and Physique Photoshoots since October of 2007.
What five words best describe you?
Curious, independent, determined, passionate, sensitive.
What has made you want to stay in London?
I haven?t really thought about it before now, to be honest. My family lives close to here (about 30 minutes away), I went to high school here and moved here for college around the time I turned 18. In that time I?ve met a lot of people who are important to me, have become comfortable, and work has begun to expand here (Many clients are local).
We?ll see what the future holds but, as of now, I guess you could say everything I need is right here.
At what point in your life did you make fitness a lifestyle? What steps did you take to achieve this and what made you decide to make this change?
Over a couple years, I had begun making some pretty poor lifestyle choices, and decisions in many areas. These decisions had turned into some very unhealthy habits. I wasn?t happy with myself and what these habits were leading me to so I started to think about what I wanted to do about that. One of the things I came up with was to get a gym membership.
On February 25th, 2007 (I still have the old training journal I started on that day!) I signed up at Fitness Forum; it was right down the road from my new apartment at that time. A personal trainer weighed me, took measurements and checked body fat percentage. I made a promise to myself and to him that I would get my butt in there 6 days a week, follow a regime I had put together from some pieces of info gathered from the past, and leave behind any excuses. We then booked a 6-week assessment where numbers would be re-checked and compared to the start.
Over this 6-week period, it didn?t take long to fall in love with resistance training. I loved feeling strong and connected to my body.
I was also a smoker then, had started cutting down on smoking at that time, and eventually quit.
When it was time for my 6-week assessment, according to the methods used, my bodyfat percentage had not budged! AND my weight was still the same. I left the gym feeling very frustrated. But then, once admitting there were other areas of life that needed some changing if I really wanted to see and feel results, I began replacing some other unhealthy habits with healthier choices. The ?normal? staples I had adopted of Pizza, McDonald?s and nights filled with Vodka/Cranberries and partying were replaced with healthy whole foods, and doing a lot more of the things that actually mattered. I began spending more quality time with myself, my family and the other important and supportive people I was forming closer bonds with.
I would still have the ?cheats? but not more than a couple times per week, and times including alcohol were saved for special occasions/planned events.
This quickly became a lifestyle when I experienced how awesome I could feel, how much stronger I had become, and my body composition shifted like crazy! In just over a couple months after that 6-week check in, my body fat percentage had folded in half and it felt like my mind and body had awoken, and changed so much. It felt really amazing.
Who was, or is your mentor in the fitness industry?
I have had guidance and help from many really amazing people but my two main mentors/influences in the fitness industry are IFBB Pro Stephanie Worsfold and Carter Schoffer of Precision Nutrition and Body Transformation.
What was it like competing in your first show in 2007? What aspect made you fall in love with competitions?
I loved my first show. It was a fitness model competition in Windsor, Ontario and the whole time leading up to that day was fun. I was already quite lean before deciding on it, which helped make the prep relaxing, not too far off from my ?new-found normal? and just an all around awesome experience.
My Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister-In-Law, Coach at the time/great friend Stephanie Worsfold and a couple other friends came up to watch. It was awesome sharing that experience with them.
I fell in love with the learning behind each prep and the challenge. You become sort of a science experiment when it comes to training and nutrition changes, and especially with the final water and carb manipulations during the final week of prep. I always get so excited when trying out something new and watching my body?s reaction to it.
What is the most challenging part about prepping for a competition?
It can be time and energy consuming depending on the prep and the person. I found a few preps to be more energy and time consuming than others (especially the last two). This was probably the most challenging part, figuring out ways to manage time and energy so that a fair as possible balance with ?real life? and prep could be made. Like many other competitors, I still work, have other responsibilities and life doesn?t stop because a person decides to prep for a show.
Cardio is also not always a favourite, and this is often increased for me as the show date comes closer (as it is for many others as well). I would do the amount required, but it was a challenge some days, for sure.
Besides the challenges, what is the most rewarding part?
Getting through challenges is definitely rewarding.
It?s pretty cool how much getting through challenges in one area can have a positive impact on other areas, as well. I feel that I?ve gained a renewed sense of confidence from facing challenges and started to see that I really can accomplish anything I set my mind to.
There are still times where doubts creep up but, I believe, through a lot of these challenges faced, I?ve become a lot better equipped to recognize these doubts and push myself past them.
At what point did you realize you wanted to coach other competitors, and help assist them through their transformations?
A few years ago, my soon-to-be first coaching client, Meaghan Terzis was speaking with one of the trainers at Fitness Forum about looking into help for an upcoming shoot and possibly a show. He referred her to me, and Meaghan and I met up to go over her goals. I had never worked with a competitor before and hadn?t really assisted many people at all in a structured way at that point, so this was an exciting and new experience for me.
Meaghan has a beautiful and ideal fitness model physique, she is very dedicated and she has the determination/mind set to follow a structured plan to a T. This helped both of us learn so much from how her body reacted, what things seemed to work well, what didn?t and what to do better for next time. On show day, I loved helping her and the other girls backstage, seeing her on stage and sharing that excitement. It was so much fun to me!
More and more girls began contacting me and it has just kept growing from there.?
You?ve actually decided to take the step away from competing and focus soley on helping your clients? What was your reasoning behind that decision?
I don?t know if I?ll never compete again, but it didn?t feel like the healthiest decision or the most conducive to my goals and priorities anymore. I mean, I encourage the girls to find a healthy balance with training and nutrition, and a love/appreciation for themselves before starting the preps, or deciding to compete. One of the reasons being that, for the majority, stage shape is not realistic for an extended period of time, and you very likely won?t look like that all year. If you don?t appreciate who you are and how you look before getting into that sort of shape, the outcome may not be great after the shows/shoots are finished.
When I sat back and thought about it, I wondered if I had ever really given myself the chance to do that- to appreciate who I was without the idea of having a show or shoot on the horizon. Or, if I did have that healthy mindset at one point, I wanted to be sure that I still had it. I think it was a good decision to step back.
I also tend to go ?all or nothing? into shows. My focus is lasered in on that goal and, although I can juggle work and other things, I don?t give the focus to some of those important things that I started to think more about. I wanted to excel on a personal and professional level, and I realized to do that I needed to narrow my focus, and taking a break from the shows would likely be very helpful there.
How would you explain the title ?Holistic Lifestyle Coach.??
The word ?Holistic? can mean different things to different people so the title Holistic Lifestyle Coach may as well. To me, this means keeping site of the whole picture when it comes to assisting clients with healthy lifestyle changes and goals. Overall health/well-being, performance and body composition should all be seen as important.
Physique Competition preps are different in many ways than healthy lifestyle goals. During competition preps, there are some extreme aspects regardless of how you look at it. Water manipulation and getting down to unnaturally low body fat percentages are not healthy practices, and most people are not going to feel amazing throughout the entire show prep. But I feel a coach who keeps site of the whole picture (or views things holistically) aims to use the safest practices possible, is careful to think of the client?s health and well-being for the long-run (not just how great they look on stage) and maintains watchful concern for the client?s overall health and well-being throughout the entire show prep.
We came across you after featuring one of your clients, Rita Catolino. Who else are you currently, or have you helped make a name for themselves in the fitness world?
I have really been fortunate with the roster of girls I have worked with, and am working with now. There are numerous girls that are doing really well in the fitness world in their own way. A few have had great success in fitness magazines, more with the shows and in personal areas of life.
Some of the girls who have been successful in a public sense are Rita Catolino, Meaghan Terzis and Midori Rutledge. Rita and I have both worked with Midori. Rita, Meaghan and Midori are all regular features in Oxygen Magazine. Others have also been successful with shows, which is really awesome, but I don?t want to take away from the girls setting and reaching other great personal goals. These goals may not be as publicly seen, but they are just as important and it?s pretty incredible to watch these progressions and to be a part of them.
I think another important thing to note is that we all work as a team. Everyone plays a role in the support and success of the girls, and it?s pretty amazing. We all connect online, meet up for different workshops/seminars, workouts, yoga, etc., and I believe that the team atmosphere and support is so important for the success of many.
I love what we have built, and have a great feeling about where things are headed.
Some of your current clients have shows and shoots coming up. When and where are they, and how can we follow who?s competing?
Yes they do! Many of the girls are doing shows and shoots this season. The shows they will be taking part in are:
OPA Festival City Stratford Championships on April 14th
The Stephanie Worsfold Classic here in London on May 5th
The GNC Sudbury Championships on May 12th
The Ontario?s on June 2nd in Toronto as a part of the Toronto Pro Super Show
The OPA Nationals in August
The IFBB North American?s (dates and locations for Nationals and North American?s TBA)
There are quite a few exciting shoots, too and info on those will be posted as they happen.
If you would like to keep updated on shoot info, who is competing and how the preps are going you can check out my blog: ReneePrimeau.Wordpress.com, our team Facebook page: Team Primeau, my facebook page: Renee Primeau, or Twitter: @ReneePrimeau
If someone is looking to contact you for your services, whether it be training, prep or holistic lifestyle coaching, how can they contact you?
E-mail is best and renee@reneeprimeau.com is my address.
How many times a week do you go to the gym? What is your ?weekly routine? like?
It really depends on the goal and the program being followed at that time. Usually I am in the gym anywhere from 4-6 days a week, the programs change every 4-weeks, and I really enjoy being challenged and learning from many different types of training.
Right now I am completing mainly full-body workouts of both metabolic, or athletically oriented efforts, and ?real? strength training movements as a 4-day routine. These workouts are performed every other day and cardio is performed on 1-2 of the days in between. With this awesome weather I am really loving getting outdoors for some of that!
In a couple weeks I am beginning a new training block with Carter, and I am pretty excited to see what that looks like.
We see you?re now also an employee at Fitness Forum, which has been doing well since its opening in 1985. What makes it so successful?
Yep : ) I have worked out of Fitness Forum for about 4 years now.
Fitness forum is a different kind of gym. It is family owned and operated, the atmosphere is super friendly and so are the staff. We have members that have been there since Fitness Forum first opened (27 years ago!), and we all know each other.
It?s not just a fitness facility but a community, and I think this is what sets it apart, and makes it so special. Members range from young competitive athletes, to all ages of regular gym goers, to the elderly. Comments are frequently made from members about how welcome, comfortable and free they feel to do their ?own thing.? It?s a pretty cool place.
What is you diet plan like? What are your reasons for eating this way?
I am not really following a ?structured plan? right now. This is a weird experience for me after being structured for so long *laughs*. I just wanted to see if I could do that- maintain a healthy approach to food without being so ?food focused.?
I don?t think there is anything wrong with a structured plan, and think it may be a healthy approach for many and a great way to build new healthy habits, I just know that I?ve been food focused for a long time. It was like ?When am I going to get a chance to eat?? ?Where am I gonna be for my next meal?? ?If I don?t eat every 2 hours my muscle is gonna fall off and I?m gonna starve to death.? *laughs* Okay, that may have been a bit of an exaggeration but I definitely centered a lot of my days and activities around eating and wanted to change this.
I think we should plan to have good food choices on hand and to be sure we get the nutrients we need but my hardwired ?I NEED food at this specific time? mindset wasn?t really making sense to me, anymore.
Instead I am just following habits. Approximately 1 day a week, on a non-training day, I will complete a partial fast (anywhere from 4-8 hours after the time of waking) but, most days, my meals are spaced apart every few hours and amount to about 5 a day. I have a lean protein source with each meal, veggies (green and coloured) with at least 3 of the meals, healthy fat sources with 2-3 of the meals (olive oil and flax meal are used most frequently), clean carb sources (usually fresh fruit) timed earlier on in the day, and around my workouts. I don?t really think about specific counts of macronutrients, calories or anything else and, after a bit of an uncomfortable phase, I really enjoy living like this now.
?Cheats? are taken 1-2 times a week and usually include a desert, or a glass of wine with dinner, or a muffin during a coffee out with a friend. If I know there is a special event coming up, a friend or family member?s birthday, a special holiday, etc., I will save the cheats until then.
Maybe if I ever do decide to take body composition to another level again, or feel the need for more structure for some reason, this could change but, right now, this way feels awesome to me.
What are you plans looking forward?
There are a lot of exciting things in the works.
When it comes to work related plans, right now I am completing courses and taking part in various workshops/seminars (also career and future plan oriented).
I always want to keep learning, growing and improving. That will always be a part of my plans.
Do you have any final words for your fans, clients and the readers of Lions Den U?
Do what makes you happy, whatever that happens to be. Set your goals based on what you want for yourself and know that you can reach these goals.
Don?t limit yourself. Don?t base your beliefs on other people?s opinions, achievements or abilities. You have your own unique greatness to offer.
It really makes no difference what you?ve done, who you?ve been or where you are- You can make better decisions, and you can choose your way to the life you deserve at any time. We all deserve to know and experience that.
Thanks Renee!

Recently an old colleague, Dr Andrew Rogoyski, came to lecture to our MSc students on how government deals with cyber security. Dr Rogoyski has studied the interactions between government and industry and his talk led to a key question for which there was a surprising range of views. The question? When and how should government get involved in cyber security?
The UK has the most Internet-centric economy in the G20 group of industrialised nations according to research by the Boston Consulting Group released in March 2012. It estimates that the UK?s internet economy was worth ?121bn in 2010, more than ?2,000 per person. Couple this with the knowledge that approximately 20 threats per second are discovered on the Internet, and it?s not surprising that UK government lists cyber security as a ?Tier 1 Threat?, alongside terrorism. However, recognising the threat is slightly different from actually doing something about it.
Governments now recognise that there is a strong economic advantage in having a secure digital infrastructure. In order to attract businesses to your economy increasingly you need to demonstrate that your country is a safe place to conduct Internet-based business. Booz-Allen reports on this aspect of a countries with its cyber hub index.
Interestingly the UK and the US are seen as the safest places for Internet based business. This has resulted in several large corporations quietly reversing the recent trend to relocate business to the developing world to reduce costs. Ensuring security has become as important, if not more important, a business driver for governments as cost. When a country loses its AAA credit score for a ratings agency, it makes headlines. I predict it will not be long before similar importance is attached to measures such as the Booz Allen cyber hub index.
But in order to ensure a safe environment, where does government responsibility end and business responsibility begin? In November 2011, the UK government hosted the first intra-governmental conference on the cyber threat, at which time they issued a revised cyber-security strategy. As well as discussing the usual topics of the threat from cybercrime, espionage and warfare, the conference saw the debate begin at governmental level as to where responsibility lies for protecting key assets on the Internet. When the national interest is threatened, responsibility for protection lies primarily with the state, but many governments are powerless in the case of the cyber threat, for a variety of reasons.
A significant difficulty in protecting critical national assets is that the Internet is primarily run by private companies or non-governmental organisations. That?s true even in the case of? critical national infrastructure such as utilities, which are vulnerable to attack via the Internet. Most of the infrastructure and services that underpin national digital infrastructures are run by private companies such as HP, Fujitsu, IBM, Verizon, BT and others. Even the key technologies employed to sit on top of the infrastructure are developed by private companies ranging from Google, to Microsoft, to Apple plus a raft of much smaller start-ups, some of whom you will never have heard. The level of investment produced by these companies dwarfs those made by governments.
For example, the UK?s National Cyber Security Programme is making available a total of GBP650 million (USD1.01 billion) over four years. This money is intended to be part of a programme whereby government works with businesses, as well as protecting governmental assets. But this money is lost when you think, for example, of cyber security company Symantec spending USD862 million in 2011 alone on research and development. Similarly, Microsoft spent USD8.7 billion in 2010 and Google USD3.7 billion. The disparity between individual government spend, and that they are used to procuring systems over many years rather than at the speed at which Internet technologies change, means that governments find it very difficult to engage with private businesses.
So what have governments done in response to this situation? Well, they have acted in remarkably different ways.
For example, you might imagine the all-out attack on Estonia in 2007 would have led to an aggressive response. Instead it led to the formation of the Co-operative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCD COE). The purpose of CCD COE is to understand the cyber threat as it develops and thence to prevent those attacks. This is an approach which has received the full backing of NATO. Meanwhile, the EU has created the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) to act as a hub for the exchange of information, best practices and knowledge in the field of information security.
Other governments have adopted a more militaristic approach. In May 2010, the United States Cyber Command, part of the US Strategic Command, became operational. Cyber Command is not just there for the operations and defence of specified Department of Defense information networks but also to carry out ?full spectrum military cyberspace operations?. Similarly, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced in May 2011 that the country would set up a cyber-defence task force to defend Israel?s vital infrastructure from cyber-attacks.
Regardless of style of approach one common theme has emerged: the key to effective defence against the rapidly evolving threat is shared intelligence. The studies conducted by Dr Rogoyski showed that what business wants most from government is Information Sharing and Awareness Raising. And, intelligence is one thing that governments do have.
They are now looking for ways of sharing sensitive information, that they might otherwise be unhappy to share as it might reveal the source of the information, with those who are directly affected by it. In the US in 2011, the Department of Defense launched a new pilot programme, the Defense Industrial Base Cyber-Pilot, in which it shares classified threat intelligence with around 20 defence contractors or their commercial internet service providers. Although the initial scope of Defense Industrial Cyber-Pilot was to help protect government network, it doesn?t take a great leap of imagination to see how this can become a two way process, especially in areas such as power, transportation and energy. The success of this scheme resulted in it being extended in September 2011 to include more private organisation. It has, however, highlighted in the public consciousness that the military are involved in protecting the Internet, and the debate continues as to whether it should be the Department for Homeland Security of the DoD that has such a responsibility. Either way, the positive aspect is that it is happening.
In the UK, the private sector is not necessarily waiting for government direction. For example, a financial services virtual task force has been formed by several large banks. This task force co-operates with the Metropolitan Police and exchanges information on threats and attacks as rapidly as possible. This has proved to be a very effective approach and has led to a number of successful prosecutions. Another information exchange is being set up by Intellect and ADS, UK hi-tech trade associations.
The emergence in 2011 of the infamous Stuxnet virus has highlighted how vulnerable critical national infrastructure is, and this has given a jolt to all those thinking about Internet security from a governmental perspective. Even if it were just a commercial issue, cyber security (and certainly the perception of it) can dramatically affect a nation?s fortune in the modern world. The fact that someone can potentially turn off the water, lights and stop the trains makes people think quite differently about what is a ?stable? country, and will certainly influence anyone trying to decide whether to base their business in a country.
However, it is clear that unlike many historical threats to national wellbeing, this threat can only be checked by the closest collaboration possible between government and business. Business must be focussed on ensuring that this happens, and government must be more willing to share what it knows than it has been previously.
With news only this week that the Duqu virus (evil son of Stuxnet) has been found in the wild in a new variant, we can see that the threats are becoming more advanced and more persistent, and perhaps most worry of all, more targeted. Governments and business have a relatively small window in time to put in place the necessary mechanisms to share information such that it can be acted upon quickly enough to prevent damage. For those countries that don?t do this, they will rapidly realise that whilst in the past people ?voted with their feet?, these days people ?vote with their mouse? and it takes a lot less time lose trust in the Internet age than ever it did before.

A good number of aspiring investors and entrepreneurs consider real estate investing, but there are some who are reluctant to give it a try because they are scared to tread in the waters of an unfamiliar business. This does not come as a surprise though, because real estate can be quite difficult to sail without knowledge, experience, and support. The great news is, any investor who wishes to be supported by people who share the same endeavor can join a real estate investing club.
A real estate investing club is a type of organization where people with common interests work together and share valuable information and personal experiences with one another. As opposed to stocks investment clubs where members meet in order to make contributions in joint accounts, real estate club members do not meet to make investments. Rather, the members meet collectively in order to share valuable information and past and present experiences with one another. Real estate price trends and strategies are also spoken about so that members can take full advantage of the current circumstances.
A real estate investing club is one of the best places to network with expert investors from various fields of real estate. These expert individuals normally offer the proper instruments that can help you make wise decisions before making investments. And because real estate clubs sponsor seminars once in a while, one can listen to educational talks from invited guest speakers from all across the globe. Hence, people who would like to make global real estate investments can obtain powerful insights about the great possibilities abroad.
Becoming a member of a real estate investing club is a personal call. Novice investors are not obligated to join one, but if they feel that they need the assistance of other people with the same business, then participating in one would be their best move. A large number of investors claim that much of their accomplishments are due to the education, support, and encouragement that they received from such clubs. With that said, if you want to learn the tricks of the trade and be surrounded with a group from which to draw inspiration and motivation, joining a real estate investing club is the best way to go.

??Stand Your Ground Laws Legalize Murder
?
by Stephen Lendman
?
Across America, institutionalized incidents replicate 17-year old Trayvon Martin's February 26 cold-blooded murder. A Black high-school student, he was shot and killed in predominantly white Sanford, FL.?
?
He was unarmed, carried candy, a can of iced tea, and some cash. He threatened no one.
?
Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman killed him in cold blood. He claims self-defense. Critics call it a hate crime. Police tapes show he's obsessed with law and order, suburban life minutia, and Black males, especially hooded youths perhaps.
?
A 2011-established Neighborhood Watch group appointed him captain. It was set up to help local police. Son of a white father and Latina mother, he's a former altar boy turned killer.
?
In 2005, he was charged with assaulting a police officer during an altercation over a friend's underage drinking arrest. A first-time offender, he avoided a felony conviction. The same year, his former fiancee accused him of domestic violence. He counter-charged in response. In 2006, the case ended when both injunctions expired.
?
According to Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee:
?
"Mr. Zimmerman was not acting outside the legal boundaries of Florida Statute by carrying his weapon when this incident occurred. He was in fact on a personal errand in his vehicle when he observed Mr. Martin in the community and called the Sanford Police Department."
?
NAACP President Ben Jealous said:
?
"The reality is that this chief had probable cause to lock up a man who shot a boy in cold blood ? because he shot a boy in cold blood ? and he failed to do that."
?
Trayvon's father Tracy said:
?
NAACP President Ben Jealous For him to be murdered by someone who weighs more than 100 pounds more than him, more than 10 years older than him, this is an outrage."
?
Others feel the same way and want charges filed. More on that below.
?
Stand Your Ground Laws: A License to Kill?
?
Florida's Stand Your Ground law allows deadly public force if authorities or individuals fear assailants pose serious threats. The law and others like it in 20 or more states expand the so-called Castle Doctrine.
?
US Legal.com defines it as follows:
?
"In criminal law, (it's) an exception to the retreat rule. The retreat rule allows a person the use of deadly force while protecting his/her place of abode, its premises and its inhabitants from attack such as from a trespasser who intends to commit a felony or inflict serious bodily injury or harm."?
?
"This defense justifies such conduct constituting a criminal offense. This is also termed as defense of premises, defense of habitation and dwelling defense."
?
In fact, Stand Your Ground laws and others like it legitimize vigilante justice.
?
Institutionalized Violence and Murder
?
Trayvon Martin's murder replicates numerous past incidents.
?
On January 1, 2009, Oakland, CA transit officer Johannes Mehserle killed Oscar Grant in cold blood. Unarmed, he threatened no one and didn't resist. Yet he was thrust face-down on the ground, shot in the back, and murdered. Videotape on at least four cameras confirmed it. USA Today said five bystanders taped it.?
?
Justifiably, the entire community erupted. In July 2010, Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Though virtually unprecedented, Grant's family, relatives and friends demanded first-degree murder. His mother Wanda said "Oscar was murdered and the law has not held the officer accountable." Jurors didn't comment.
?
Police brutality, including murder, is systemic across America. Little is done to constrain it. Rarely are law enforcement officers prosecuted. Evidence shows Blacks and other minorities face harassment, verbal and physical abuse, false arrests, and cold-blooded murder.
?
In February 1999, New York cops fired 41 shots, struck Amadou Diallo 19 times, and killed him while he stood unarmed in his apartment building vestibule.
?
In 2006, New York cops murdered Sean Bell in cold blood. Celebrating the eve of his wedding, they fired dozens of times at him as he emerged from a nightclub unarmed and unthreatening. Prosecutions didn't follow.?
?
In February, NYPD cops illegally entered unarmed Ramarley Graham's home. With no search warrant or legitimate probable cause, they shot and killed him in his kitchen.
?
Similar incidents occur often. Killer cops are absolved. Occasionally, disciplinary reprimands follow.
?
Although police departments stipulate officers should only use deadly force when their lives or others are threatened, thousands of cases show they use it indiscriminately.?
?
As a result, hundreds of claimed justifiable homicides occur annually. FBI statistics and independent reports document them. At most, police are mildly disciplined.
?
A 2009 ACLU report titled, "The Persistence of Racial Profiling in the United States" showed racial minorities are systematically victimized without cause in public, when driving, at work, at home, in places of worship, and traveling. Too often it's violently at the hands of authorities.
?
A "major impediment to (prohibiting it) remains the continued unwillingness or inability of the US government to pass federal legislation (banning the practice) with binding effect on federal, state or local law enforcement."
?
Nor do authorities comply with provisions of the 1994 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). It obligates all levels of government.
?
The Justice Department's 2003 Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies was designed to prohibit federal officers from engaging in racial profiling. In fact, it's flawed and does little to stop it. It omits "profiling based on religion, religious appearance, or national origin."?
?
Nor does it apply to state and local law enforcement where police brutality is institutionalized. In addition, it specifies no enforcement mechanisms or punishments for violators. As a result, it actually promotes profiling and abuse, including false arrests, beatings and killings.
?
Candidate Obama promised a "Blueprint for Change," prohibiting and criminalizing racial profiling, mistreatment, police brutality, and related violence. Another promise made, another broken.
?
On March 23, Law Professor Jonathan Turley called Stand Your Ground, Make My Day, and earlier Castle Doctrine laws abusive and unnecessary, saying:
?
"These laws address a problem that does not exist. There are ample protections under the common law for individuals to use the privilege of self-defense, including reasonable mistaken self-defense."
?
"Legislators are now feigning complete shock at the potential for abuse under these laws after refusing to consider the warnings of critics in passing" them.
?
Florida's law states:
?
"A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony."
?
Turley said it "reads like a stump speech where sound bites become elements of a criminal defense. The result is sound bite justice."
?
On March 21, Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page headlined, "An invitation to murder?" saying:
?
Trayvon's killing is all too familiar "to those of us who have raised young black males." Any "suspicious looking" Black youth can be killed in "self-defense."
?
"Prosecutors, gun-control advocates and other critics called it a 'shoot-first' law and, more bluntly, a 'license to kill and go free.' Born in controversy, the law is living down to the low expectation of its critics."
?
Trayvon's case and hundreds like it show why legalized murder laws demand repealing. More likely, tougher ones will be enacted followed perhaps by greater numbers of killings.
?
Public Rage Demands Justice
?
Protest rallies across America demand justice for Trayvon. Over 500,000 signed an online Moveon.org petition, wanting Zimmerman prosecuted.
?
For what it's worth, political Washington noticed belatedly. Weeks after the killing, Obama's Justice Department said its Civil Rights Division and FBI would investigate. How many previous "investigations," in fact, sanitized what should have brought prosecutions.
?
Florida's Brevard and Seminole counties announced April 10 grand jury hearings on the case. Expect little more than disciplinary indictments at best.
?
Florida Governor Rick Scott announced a special prosecutor appointment to "ton(e) down the rhetoric and preserv(e) the integrity of this investigation." It suggests more coverup than justice.
?
A Final Comment
?
Trayvon won't be the last Black youth vigilante justice victim. Blame goes well beyond killer cops. America's violent culture shares it. Wars and violence are glorified. The nation's homicide rate is highest among all Western nations. It's gun culture makes buying them simple.?
?
Systemic violence, shootings, and deaths follow. Without addressing the root cause, America's institutionalized racism, and states licensing cops to kill, expect nothing ahead to change.

OAK BROOK, Ill. New research shows that the addition of two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences to a common MR angiography technique significantly improves detection of pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition traditionally diagnosed through computed tomography (CT). Results of the study are published online in the journal Radiology.
Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clotusually from the legtravels to the lung and blocks the pulmonary artery or one of its main branches. CT angiography is the gold standard for diagnosis, but it exposes patients to ionizing radiation and iodinated contrast agent, which carries a risk of allergic reactions and kidney damage in some patients.
"MRI is developing much faster than CT," said Diego R. Martin, M.D., Ph.D., head of the Department of Radiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. "The images we're getting are already significantly better than they were a year ago. There is no doubt that in the future we will be able to offer a non-radiation-based alternative to CT for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism."
MRI has been used for pulmonary embolism detection in pregnant women and patients whose kidneys may be harmed by CT angiography contrast agents. However, the Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis III (PIOPED III) study, a major multicenter trial, found that centers had difficulty obtaining adequate quality MR pulmonary angiography (MRPA) for suspected pulmonary embolism. The PIOPED researchers determined that MRPA should be considered only at centers that routinely perform it and perform it well, and for patients who have contraindications to standard tests.
In the new study, the research team assessed the impact of two additional MRI sequences on MRPA's accuracy. The two techniquescontrast-enhanced volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) and non-contrast true fast imaging with steady-state precession (true FISP)complement MRPA, according to Dr. Martin.
The addition of VIBE provides a gray scale that enables readers to distinguish between the clot, or thrombus, and the lung, which both appear dark on MRPA.
"Also, VIBE is not time sensitive," Dr. Martin said. "If the patient coughs, you can do it again. You don't have that option with MRPA."
The true FISP test does not require contrast agent or a breath hold, an important consideration for embolism patients who often cannot hold their breath long enough for image acquisition on MRPA.
When Dr. Martin and colleagues studied the three techniques on 22 patients with CTA diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, they found a sensitivity of 55 percent, 67 percent and 73 percent for MRPA, true FISP and VIBE, respectively. Combining all three MRI sequences improved the overall detection rate to 84 percent. Specificity was 100 percent for all detection methods except for MRPA, which demonstrated one false positive.
Dr. Martin hopes his findings stimulate discussion of a new, redesigned PIOPED study.
"PIOPED III did not answer the question of whether or not MRI is a useful alternative to CT, because it didn't use all the tools available," he said.
The MRI sequences used in the study are offered on all the major vendor systems, according to Dr. Martin, with the entire three-sequence protocol taking only 15 minutes to set up and perform.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) ? With her team up by 40 late in its NCAA tournament opener, Baylor's Lindsay Palmer chased down a loose ball near midcourt, took a couple steps forward and heaved the ball toward the basket to beat the shot clock.
It went in, and her teammates on the sideline could barely contain themselves.
"Lindsay's 3 was amazing," Lady Bears star Brittney Griner said.
At some point ? perhaps soon ? Baylor could face a real test during its pursuit of a national title. But on Sunday, the top-seeded Lady Bears overwhelmed 16th-seeded UC Santa Barbara 81-40, so Griner spent most of the second half watching reserves like Palmer play extended minutes.
The Baylor bench scored 41 points ? more than the entire UCSB team.
"I get to coach a bunch of kids that are all on the same page. They want to win a national championship, and whatever role they're asked to play, they do," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I don't have a selfish kid in that locker room."
Griner scored 14 points in only 22 minutes. Brooklyn Pope scored 13 points and Destiny Williams added 12 for Baylor (35-0), which had 11 players log at least 12 minutes.
The Lady Bears will face ninth-seeded Florida (20-12) in the second round of the Des Moines Regional on Tuesday night. The Gators beat Ohio State 70-65 on Sunday, meaning Baylor won't have to face the Buckeyes in their home state.
"Florida is very good, Florida is very athletic, Florida is very physical," Mulkey said. "When you can come to an environment and basically you're playing a road game ? I didn't see a lot of colors in that gym other than red ? that tells you how good Florida is."
Baylor has not lost since falling in the quarterfinals of last year's NCAA tournament. The Lady Bears set a school record for victories in a season Sunday, a mark that could not have felt more inevitable or routine in the context of what Baylor is trying to accomplish.
If the Lady Bears win the national title, they'll do it with a 40-0 record ? a mark no NCAA team has achieved.
Griner, the 6-foot-8 center who wowed the crowd by dunking during warmups, went 7 for 11 during the game. The Gauchos at times had two defenders fronting Griner to prevent Baylor from passing her the ball, but other players took advantage for the Lady Bears.
"We played against maybe the eventual national champion," UCSB coach Carlene Mitchell said. "We were outmanned, it's pretty obvious, at every position, and you have to give Baylor all the credit."
Griner scored 45 points in the Big 12 tournament against Kansas State, but in the two games since, she's scored only 25 points on 19 shots. That 86-65 victory over Kansas State was actually the closest game the Lady Bears have played this month.
Griner said she was happy to have a chance to rest for much of Sunday's game.
"I definitely enjoyed it," she said. "It was definitely fun."
Odyssey Sims didn't start Sunday in what Mulkey called a "coach's decision."
"It's a very minor thing, but I'm from the old school, and you do things right," Mulkey said. "She knows why she didn't start. It's really not a big deal. Most coaches would have looked the other way, but it's all about teaching kids lessons."
Sims contributed 10 points to Baylor's bench total. Sune Agbuke scored 11 in 12 minutes.
Then there was Palmer, who had only 16 points on the season before her last-minute 3-pointer from about 40 feet.
"She got her a good look at it, and you're just happy for her," Mulkey said. "That's probably going to make SportsCenter, huh? It won't be Brittney Griner on Baylor's team, it will be Lindsay Palmer. Good for her."
