ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, is being prepared for the final journey to its launch pad on Kwajalein Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. The mission will study everything from massive black holes to our own sun. It is scheduled to launch no earlier than June 13.
"We will see the hottest, densest and most energetic objects with a fundamentally new, high-energy X-ray telescope that can obtain much deeper and crisper images than before," said Fiona Harrison, the NuSTAR principal investigator at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., who first conceived of the mission 20 years ago.
The observatory is perched atop an Orbital Sciences Corporation Pegasus XL rocket. If the mission passes its Flight Readiness Review on June 1, the rocket will be strapped to the bottom of an aircraft, the L-1011 Stargazer, also operated by Orbital, on June 2. The Stargazer is scheduled to fly from Vandenberg Air Force Base in central California to Kwajalein on June 5 to 6.
After taking off on launch day, the Stargazer will drop the rocket around 8:30 a.m. PDT (11:30 a.m. EDT). The rocket will then ignite and carry NuSTAR to a low orbit around Earth.
"NuSTAR uses several innovations for its unprecedented imaging capability and was made possible by many partners," said Yunjin Kim, the project manager for the mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We're all really excited to see the fruition of our work begin its mission in space."
NuSTAR will be the first space telescope to create focused images of cosmic X-rays with the highest energies. These are the same types of X-rays that doctors use to see your bones and airports use to scan your bags. The telescope will have more than 10 times the resolution and more than 100 times the sensitivity of its predecessors while operating in a similar energy range.
The mission will work with other telescopes in space now, including NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which observes lower-energy X-rays. Together, they will provide a more complete picture of the most energetic and exotic objects in space, such as black holes, dead stars and jets traveling near the speed of light.
"NuSTAR truly demonstrates the value that NASA's research and development programs provide in advancing the nation's science agenda," said Paul Hertz, NASA's Astrophysics Division director. "Taking just over four years from receiving the project go-ahead to launch, this low-cost Explorer mission will use new mirror and detector technology that was developed in NASA's basic research program and tested in NASA's scientific ballooning program. The result of these modest investments is a small space telescope that will provide world-class science in an important but relatively unexplored band of the electromagnetic spectrum."
NuSTAR will study black holes that are big and small, far and near, answering questions about the formation and physics behind these wonders of the cosmos. The observatory will also investigate how exploding stars forge the elements that make up planets and people, and it will even study our own sun's atmosphere.
The observatory is able to focus the high-energy X-ray light into sharp images because of a complex, innovative telescope design. High-energy light is difficult to focus because it only reflects off mirrors when hitting at nearly parallel angles. NuSTAR solves this problem with nested shells of mirrors. It has the most nested shells ever used in a space telescope: 133 in each of two optic units. The mirrors were molded from ultra-thin glass similar to that found in laptop screens and glazed with even thinner layers of reflective coating.
The telescope also consists of state-of-the-art detectors and a lengthy 33-foot (10-meter) mast, which connects the detectors to the nested mirrors, providing the long distance required to focus the X-rays. This mast is folded up into a canister small enough to fit atop the Pegasus launch vehicle. It will unfurl about seven days after launch. About 23 days later, science operations will begin.
NuSTAR is a Small Explorer mission led by Caltech and managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The spacecraft was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation in Dulles, Va. Its instrument was built by a consortium including Caltech; JPL; University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley); Columbia University in New York; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; the Danish Technical University in Denmark; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.; and ATK Aerospace Systems in Goleta, Calif. NuSTAR will be operated by UC Berkeley, with the Italian Space Agency providing its equatorial ground station located at Malindi, Kenya. The mission's outreach program is based at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif. NASA's Explorer Program is managed by Goddard. JPL is managed by Caltech for NASA.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, there are two ways to go about making home improvements. Either you splurge for something purely for the sybaritic pleasure of having it the Italian marble bathroom you?ve dreamed about; that skylight that your spouse has been hinting at for the last six years or you take a pragmatic approach, buying an energy-efficient furnace or repairing a leaky roof because you want to increase your home?s market value.
Don?t expect to score on both counts. Just because you pour $20,000 into your home doesn?t mean that your house is worth $20,000 more. Many homeowners spend on amenities such as phones in every bathroom or a decorative stone wall that are only peripheral to the value of the house.
Exactly how much you?ll recoup in costs depends on several factors, including the direction of the broader housing market, the value of the homes in your neighborhood, when you plan to sell the home and the nature of the project itself. In some housing markets, you could, indeed, earn more than your investment back on a remodeling project. Adding a midrange deck to a home in San Francisco, for example, often recoups well more than 100% of its costs on homes sold within the year of the project s completion. But you shouldn?t count on those types of returns. In Columbus, Ohio, the same project is likely to recoup less than two-thirds of its costs.
And keep in mind that the longer you hold on to your home after a remodeling project is completed, the less likely you are to recoup its value. That?s in part because design tastes can shift significantly over time. Remember when avocado green was all the rage? Also, there?s little reward for having the fanciest house on the block. A house that?s priced higher than its neighboring homes could be perceived as overpriced even if it does have more value.
This section examines a few improvements that real estate experts say pay off more often than not and some that rarely make a difference when it comes time to sell your home.
Kitchens
Even a few basic improvements to your kitchen can pay handsome dividends, For most buyers, [the kitchen] is the heart of the house. Paint, wallpaper, and even refloor the room if necessary. Consider sanding, staining or painting dingy-looking cabinets. Replace old cabinet hardware a low-cost improvement that makes a big difference in appearance. Just be sure to go with a classic design and, if possible, use high-quality materials ? after all, good taste endures. Expect to recoup between 70% and 80% of kitchen-remodeling jobs.
Creating New Space
As a rule, improvements that increase the functional space of a home hold their value longer than ones that just make a house look better. It?s also significantly cheaper than adding an addition to your home. Converting an attic into a bedroom, for example, can returns upwards of 75% of its cost. Turning your basement into a room for socializing will set you back, but about 75% of the costs are likely to be recouped.
An Extra Bathroom
Adding an extra bathroom with all the trimmings marble vanity top, molded sink, bathtub with shower and ceramic tile almost pays for itself. You should make back between 65% and 75% of your costs of remodeling a full bathroom, and around 65% of the costs of adding a full bath.
Decks
Installing a deck may be the most cost-efficient way to add square footage to your house, and of all the outdoor home improvements except painting, it may be the most reliable value. Deck additions generally recoup 85% of their value.
New Windows and Other Green Updates
The savings on your utility bills is reason enough to consider energy-efficient improvements, but they will also add to the resale value of your home. Efficient windows and doors, a new roof (maybe even solar panels), and new insulation may be pricey, but some 65% to 76% may be recovered at resale. When considering new windows, however, keep in mind that customizing windows with fancy shapes, bays and bows doesn?t necessarily add any resale value.
Swimming Pools
It?s commonly agreed that a swimming pool has no resale value at all. In fact, some home buyers spend thousands of dollars to fill in a pool after purchasing a property. The main reason pools repel more prospective buyers than they attract is that they need expensive upkeep. Running a close second is the fear of liability: Pool accidents are a quick way to end up the subject of a negligence suit. A lot of people simply don?t want the responsibility.
Manicured Gardens
Fancy gardens which will require time and money to tend usually won?t add to the offering price. Landscaping is for your own enjoyment. It may be a $40,000 investment, but it won t add $40,000 to the value of your house. The same goes for expensive fences and stone walls. They look nice, but buyers don?t pay up for them.
Basic Improvements
It may not be all that enjoyable, but it?s the basic improvements that may have the greatest return on your home?s value. You could have a beautiful new kitchen, but if your roof is leaking, you have a real problem. So if you?re thinking of putting your house on the market in the next year or so, be sure to tackle any problems with the home?s structure or mechanical systems before you, say, install that hot tub you?ve always dreamed of.
Dancing With the Stars' Maksim Chmerkovskiy was photographed kissing fellow pro dancer co-star Peta Murgatroyd this weekend, sparking rumors of romance.
That wasn't the only time the hard-bodied pair and rumored couple were spotted together in Sin City. Witnesses have seen them together all over Vegas.
And, at the opening of Chmerkovskiy's new dance studio in Connecticut on May 23, the pair stood arm-in-arm while he whispered in her ear. Hmm ...
"She's had a crush on him for a long time," a source tells People of Peta. "They are really great together. And he is very happy. It's early but I think this will last. They're a great match, a good couple. She says they're not dating but they are. Everyone knows it."
Still, at the debut of the Dance With Me studio (which Maks opened with his brother Val and fellow pro Tony Dovolani), both danced around questions.
"I'm here to support Maksim," was all Murgatroyd would say about Chmerkovskiy, who wouldn't directly address the nature of their relationship either.
"I try to keep certain things private just because – what's a politically correct way of saying it? It's none of anybody's business," he said. "It's very intimate and personal."
Yeah. They're totally doing the horizontal Argentine tango.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued a tropical storm warning for residents living in Volusia County.
Subtropical Storm Beryl, the second named storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, is moving west-southwest toward the southeastern coast of the United States at about 6 mph, a speed the Hurricane Center expects to increase through Sunday.
At 11 p.m. Saturday, Beryl's center was located near 30.8 degrees north latitude and 77.2 degrees west longitude, or about 300 miles east-northeast of Jacksonville. The storm is expected to turn west Sunday night, with its center nearing the warning area later that evening. Its current sustained winds are about 50 mph.
Residents of northeastern Florida should expect Beryl to produce mostly wind gusts and up to 2 to 4 inches of rainfall.
Tropical storm force winds are expected to begin across Volusia County and north of Orlando by Sunday afternoon.
The Hurricane Center will release its next advisory at midnight Sunday.
A high risk of rip currents is expected along the northeast Florida coast from Nassau through Flagler counties. A moderate risk of rip currents is also expected along the east central Florida coast from Volusia through Martin counties.
Conditions are expected to be present through Monday. Beach goers should remember to remain alert when red flags are flying.
?In addition to the potential for dangerous rip currents, high waves up to 4 to 6 feet could cause moderate beach erosion and minor coastal flooding,? said State Meteorologist Amy Godsey. ?Beachgoers should remember to review the rip current outlook for their area, check the warning flag signs before entering the water and swim within sight of a lifeguard.??
Tropical storm warnings are in effect from the Volusia and Brevard County line through South Carolina. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a tropical storm watch for Baker, Bradford, Clay, Union, and Putnam Counties.
Beryl is projected to move west-southwest into Northeast Florida or southern Georgia Sunday night through Monday night, briefly stalling, then turning northeast towards South Carolina ahead of an approaching cold front. As it moves inland, it is expected to decrease in intensity into a tropical or subtropical depression.
SAN FRANCISCO?? Crowds gathered along San Francisco's waterfront Sunday, while San Francisco Bay was crowded with pleasure boats, tug boats and other vessels as the city celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Tens of thousands of people were expected to flock to the area to enjoy a number of events taking place along a section of waterfront stretching from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero.
At least several thousand people had gathered along the waterfront by Sunday afternoon, said Mary Currie, public affairs director for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.
"Everyone is biking and walking and looks very happy," she said. "We're off to a great start."

San Francisco resident Daniel Sutphin and his family were among those in the crowd enjoying the day and the views of the bridge.
"It's such an iconic structure, depending on the day or the hour, it just looks like it changes continuously," Sutphin said as he walked through the Fort Point area with his wife and their three young children.

Since it opened in 1937, more than 2 billion vehicles have crossed the 1.7-mile-long bridge named after the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance of water to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, and championed by engineer Joseph Strauss in the 1920s.
Because of the crowds expected and with no parking available near the bridge, officials were urging people to take mass transit to the events.
The California Highway Patrol was planning on shutting down traffic across the bridge from 9 p.m. through 10 p.m. for a monumental fireworks display set to take place over the bridge.
In a stark contrast to the thousands of celebrants, members of the group the Bridge Rail Foundation, an organization dedicated to stopping suicide jumps from the bridge, erected a display of 1,558 pairs of shoes, representing the number of people who died in leaps form the bridge since it opened in 1937.
"It's a symbol of how deep and serious this problem has been," said Paul Muller, a spokesman for the group. "We're still losing 30 to 35 a people a year off the bridge," he said.
Meanwhile on the water, Golden Gate ferries were running again after a one-day strike disrupted service across San Francisco Bay on Saturday.
Workers represented by the Inlandboatmen's Union walked off the job on a day strike, forcing the cancellation of ferries operated by Golden Gate between Larkspur, Sausalito and San Francisco.

The strike was called after nearly a year of negotiations over workloads and other matters, said Marina Secchitano, the union's regional director.
California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement Saturday evening, saying that he was appointing a board to investigate the strike, which, he claimed, created a disruption to public service.
Secchitano disputed the governor's claim, questioning the motivation to call for an investigation after a one-day strike. "(This is) an action to try to silence us," she said.
"They're counting on this process to back our membership off the issue," she said.
Ferry and union officials said service resumed Sunday when workers returned to work.

If the outside of your house isn?t appealing to you, then chances are your neighbors feel the same way. Look at your shutters, and see if they could use a new coat of paint or need straightening. Make sure your driveway is not in disrepair as this is what welcomes visitors to your home. You want it to be inviting.
A great way to let outdoor light inside your kitchen is by using minimal window coverings. Using dark drapery and valances can block out natural lighting and make your kitchen appear dark. Using a light colored curtain or sheer, can be a great help in lighting up your kitchen, the natural way.
When you are making a home improvement that could affect the area around it, be sure to take proper care of the area. If you will be painting, it is a good idea to lay a tarp down to protect flooring and furniture from paint splatters and spills. Make sure to cover any surfaces that you do not want scratched or damaged.
Purchase your building materials at re-use stores such as Habitat For Humanity?s Re-Store. When you do this, you are saving resources and recycling your money by investing it in your own home and in providing homes for the homeless. If you hire a contractor, make sure s/he does not throw out usable materials. Either re-use them yourself or donate them to the Re-Store.
If you have a home improvement project, why not involve the neighbors? Look into tool borrowing websites to borrow goods from your neighbors. You can borrow expensive tools for just a fraction of the cost; saving you lots of money, and enabling you to have the tools you need when you need them. Bonus! You get to meet and know your neighbors, making your neighborhood a better, happier place to live.
Attaching two PVC pipes is a simple process that requires PVC primer and PVC cement. It is important that you use these specific products as your pipe will not hold with any other glues or cements (since PVC cement melts the PVC slightly to create a more firm bind) and it may be prone to leaking if you avoid a coat of PVC primer. Additionally, there should be no water on the surfaces of the pipes.
If you are replacing your exterior lighting, you may want to consider installing outdoor motion detectors in strategic areas. These lighting fixtures are activated by sensors that recognize movement, and will only light up areas when it is necessary. This will save you money by lowering your outdoor energy use.
Extend the life of your hot water tank by draining it completely once per year. Water tanks that are never emptied may have several inches of sediment in the bottom, which can contribute to premature wear on the tank. Shut the gas or electricity supply off before draining the tank by using the valve located at the bottom.

In the last issue of American Girl Magazine, there was a recipe my daughter could not wait to try. ?Caramel Apple Sweet-za, a dessert pizza. Oh my goodness. ?This is the sweetest pizza you will ever try!! ?It is delicious, although you won?t be able to eat very much- it?s rich, sweet and filling so a small slice will suffice. This would be so much fun for a sleepover treat!
Ingredients
1 tube/roll ?refrigerated sugar cookie dough
3 apples, sliced thinly
caramel dessert sauce
1 8oz package cream cheese (softened)
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup brown sugar (we used 1/4 cup and it was fine)
2TBSP milk
lemon juice
Directions
Preheat oven to 350. ?Remove cookie dough from packaging and roll/press into a greased cookie sheet or pizza pan (we don?t have a pizza pan, so ours was more oblong in shape. Still delicious). ?Bake for 15 minutes.
While ?dough? is baking in the oven, slice the apples ? toss them with a bit of lemon juice to keep them from browning. ?Then mix milk, softened cream cheese, sugar and peanut butter in a bowl.
Remove pizza from pan (we put onto a serving platter) and let cool a few minutes. ?Then spread the sauce, lay apples on top, and drizzle with caramel sauce.
Enjoy!
?
I found this recipe in American Girl Magazine, which arrived in our mailbox as a surprise. ?Opinions are my own.?

There are many wonderful things about doing business online. It?s fast, convenient, and relatively cheaper than the conventional method. However, it doesn?t guarantee 100% ease because just like any other venture, it requires hard work and dedication. It may also require some professional help. This is where an online marketing consultant comes in. He or she is a specialist who can guide and teach you about doing business online. If you have never heard of this relatively new occupation, read the following and learn of it.
The basic job of an internet marketing consultant is to formulate tactics that will make a business known to its target audience. This job is important because unless people know who you are, they can not start supporting you and what you do. Needless to say, until then, there?s zero profit for the business too. Fortunately, there are ways to do away with this. Three of the most frequent and effective ones are: search engine optimisation (SEO), social networking, and email marketing.
Let?s talk about SEO first. This term refers to the efforts of making a website more known in cyberspace. The primary goal is to make it land on top of the search engine results pages also known as SERP. The higher your rank is on the SERP, the higher the probability of your earning soars. This is because the more visible you become among internet users, the more you can probably sell. If you already have a good site and product to promote, the only thing left to do is invite people to take a look at it, right? This is where SEO comes in.
Meanwhile, social networking is the tool in making a business known to community groups. This may sound a petty move but because we?re talking about online social networking places, news can definitely travel as fast as light. Your business can reach different parts of the world all at once.
It?s quite easy to understand why an online marketing consultant would make use of social media in promoting a business. Platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter have overtaken traditional media because they are faster, cheaper, and more effective. Their viral effect has the power to change anyone?s game and it?s no wonder why a lot of online marketing consultants use them.
Then, email marketing, on the other hand, is the way of reaching out to people through email. It can be a convenient way for an entrepreneur to introduce him or herself as well as the products and services he or she may be offering. Of course, a solid mailing list is necessary for this to work. The larger the list is, the bigger the chances of earning becomes. But, the list must be created in a legitimate way. This means that the recipients should voluntarily give their email addresses so they won?t get surprised when they receive something from you.
These are some of the most widely used methods that an online marketing consultant typically works on. The list doesn?t stop here, of course, but these are surely three of the best. Even with them alone, an experienced internet marketing consultant can already start the ball of the business rolling.
I'm looking for more people to join my rp, it will be starting later this evening or tomorrow morning. We could really use more of anything but what we need most right now are humans and elves for the light forces and at least a werewolf if not more for dark. In this rp your characters are meant to grow and if you handle yourself well you can become powerful and even get one of six God or Demon (demon ruler) positions.
I know I have no way to prove that this will be different from any other roleplay you may have seen that you think is like it but I can assure you as GM I will do my utmost to make sure everyone has fun and is kept entertained in the rp. I'm open to any individual story ideas someone might light to throw in and have plans to highlight each side and group in the rp as it goes along. Please do take a look and even if you think it's not for you if you know someone who may like it spread the word.

MIAMI (AP) ? Forecasters have issued tropical storm warnings for the Southeast coast from northeastern Florida to South Carolina as a cluster of thunderstorms is gathering strength and expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl over the Memorial Day weekend.
The National Weather Service said Friday night that the storm's winds were at 45 mph. But they are expected to increase as the storm slows down in the Atlantic.
The system was about 305 miles (490 kilometers) from Charleston, S.C., and swirling toward the Southeast coast.
Tropical storm warnings are out for the Volusia/Brevard County line in Florida to Edisto Beach, S.C. The storm is expected to eventually move southwest and the Georgia coast could see heavy rains.
Higher than normal tides will be crashing against the Southeastern coast and may cause flooding. Heavy rain is forecast.
Smartphones with?Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile operating systems continued to gobble?up market share in the first quarter of this year with 84 percent of the smartphones shipped, compared to 54.4 percent for the same period last year.
The?Android juggernaut was especially strong, with 59 percent of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter of this year, up from 36.1 percent last year, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The iPhone represented 23 percent of shipments in the first quarter, compared to 18.3 percent last year.
The widening gap between Android-iOS shipments and those of other smartphones, those that run?BlackBerry or Windows Phone?or Nokia's older?Symbian OS, shows the two giants "have successfully distanced themselves from previous market leaders," IDC said.
"The popularity of Android and iOS stems from a combination of factors that the competition has struggled to keep up with," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends program, in a statement.
"Neither Android nor iOS were the first to market with some of these features, but the way they made the smartphone experience intuitive and seamless has quickly earned a massive following." It's highly?likely that the affordability of many Android phones, and even some iPhone models, also helped their appeal.
Symbian's decline is expected, as Nokia partnered with Microsoft to concentrate on making phones using the Windows' mobile OS.
(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal).
Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS, struggling for the last few years,?has seen "a?downward trajectory as demand for older BlackBerry devices decreased and the market awaits the official release of BB 10 smartphones later this year," IDC said. The research firm also said RIM is being hurt by the fact that?more and more companies are?allowing employees to use their own smartphones for company use, and those employees are not choosing BlackBerrys.
Windows Phone devices, which had 2.2 percent of first quarter shipments, have "yet to make?significant inroads in the worldwide smartphone market, but 2012 should be considered a ramp-up year for Nokia and Microsoft to boost volumes," IDC said.
Android "boasted the longest list of smartphone vendor partners," IDC said, with Samsung being "the largest contributor to Android's success, accounting for 45.4 percent?of all Android-based smartphone shipments."

Stainless Games has today announced that the original 'Carmageddon', plus its add-on pack ?The Splat Pack?, will be available via?digital distributor GOG.com in?the near future.
As part of Stainless Games? Kickstarter campaign to fund the all-new sequel, 'Carmageddon: Reincarnation', GOG.com and Stainless Games will be providing a free copy of Carmageddon and the expansion (in addition to a copy of?Reincarnation)?to all backers who pledge $25 and above towards the making of Reincarnation.
Neil Barnden, Stainless co-founder and Executive Director on Carmageddon: Reincarnation said, ?Since we got the rights to Carmageddon back, we?ve been hearing from the community how much they?d love to be able to play the original games again, on a modern Windows PC. We?ve been hearing this message even louder since launching our Kickstarter campaign to help fund our next title in the series, Carmageddon: Reincarnation. The message from the gaming community is loud and clear: Give us something to play, while we wait for the new Carmageddon! So, that?s exactly what we?ve done.?
The free download vouchers will be available as part of the Rewards package to all backers who pledge $25 or more on the Kickstarter campaign page for Carmageddon; Reincarnation. Backers will be able to download their free copy of Carmageddon & The Splat Pack, as soon as they launch on GOG.com later in the year.
Carmageddon was originally released in 1997, and pioneered the concept of drive anywhere, ?play the way you want to play? gaming. It was both celebrated and controversial in equal measure, winning awards while gaining notoriety as the poster child for everything that?s wrong ? and therefore right ? in videogames.
However, new machines and operating system make it difficult to play the old game on current PCs without engaging in complex technical shenanigans involving wrappers and patches, curses and prayer. This is where GOG come in, as they specialize in creating and selling ?remastered? versions of classic PC games, so they work ?out-of-the-box? on current generation PCs.
For non-Kickstarter fans, the Carmageddon 1 (plus Splat Pack) will be available to buy and download as a single package for $9.99 from GOG.com sometime soon.

Technology and online-shopping experiences are greatly changing the way grocers do business, new research from the Food Marketing Institute?s 2012 U.S. Grocery Shopper study suggests.
The research, unveiled at the Food Retail Show in Dallas, could be summed up in four key areas, according to an article at My Private Brand?s website.
Seeking values is hot: Spurred on by the recession, more people are seeking out deals. But even those not directly affected by the economic downturn got caught up in the trend. And so value seeking is now a way of life for the American consumer.
Technology is part of the grocery-shopping experience: More than half of consumers use technology before or during a grocery outing, usually to find deals. So more and more people are turning to digital coupons delivered straight to their smartphone to make the bargain shopping process even easier.
Online grocery shopping is picking up: Researchers note that as digital natives ? those who have been immersed in technology since their youngest days ? grow up, more and more people will embrace shopping for groceries online.
Retailers are embracing new store formats: Consumers are looking for the ?wow factor? and retailers have to deliver it. Whether it?s with innovative displays or ?store-within-a-store? concepts, retailers have to give their consumers a reason to shop there. The online experience has shaped the way that retailers merchandise their stores. They have to do it right because, unlike online stores, it can be expensive to repeatedly redo in-store displays.

No negative impact on overall survival from post-prostate surgery hormone therapy
Embargoed until 10:30 a.m. ET Monday, May 21
In a first-of-its-kind study of adjuvant hormonal therapy (AHT) following radical prostatectomy, Mayo Clinic researchers found no adverse impact in overall survival of patients even when other health factors, specifically cardiovascular disease, were taken into account. AHT treatment controls testosterone production in patients who have undergone radical prostatectomy in order to prevent or slow the return of cancer cells. For the study, "Adjuvant Hormonal Therapy Does Not Adversely Impact Overall Survival Following Radical Prostatectomy for Men with High Risk Prostate Cancer When Stratified by Charlson Comorbidity Index or Cardiovascular Risk Factors," researchers reviewed the history of 1,247 patients who had prostate surgery at Mayo Clinic from 1988 to 2004. The review included the outcomes of patients who received AHT after prostate surgery and their cardiovascular disease history.
"Knowing the cardiovascular disease history allowed us to distinguish which factor negatively impacted the overall survival -- the cancer or the cardiovascular disease," says lead author Jeffrey Karnes, M.D., a Mayo urologist. The study found the 10-year overall survival rate among patients with cardiovascular disease who received AHT was 72 percent; it was 76 percent for those with cardiovascular disease who did not receive AHT. Similarly, for patients without cardiovascular disease the 10-year overall survival among patients who received ATH was 74 percent, compared to a 79 percent 10-year survival rate for those who did not receive AHT.
Young men with low PSA level at very low risk of prostate cancer

MULTIMEDIA ALERT: Video of interview excerpts is available on the Mayo Clinic News Network.
Three-fourths of young men ages 40? could safely avoid annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for an additional 10 years if their baseline PSA falls in the lowest 75th percentile, according to a study led by Mayo Clinic urologist Christopher Weight, M.D. The study, "Men with a Single Baseline PSA below 1.0 ng/ml Between the Ages of 40-49, Can Safely Avoid Additional PSA Screening for at Least 10 Years: Results from a Prospectively Followed Population Cohort," looked at prostate outcomes in a random sample of 268 men, ages 40?, in Olmsted County, Minn., since 1990. Each patient was evaluated by a urologist every two years, including PSA screening, an ultrasound examination and questionnaire. Among study participants, no one between 40 and 49 with a baseline PSA below 1 nanogram per milliliter developed an intermediate- or high-risk cancer during nearly 20 years of follow-up. The study also found that participants with low PSAs, below 1.0 ng/ml, were also very unlikely to develop even low-risk prostate cancer.
One-third of kidney stone sufferers likely to have recurrence
Embargoed until 8 a.m. ET, Tuesday, May 22
MULTIMEDIA ALERT: Video of interview excerpts is available on the Mayo Clinic News Network.
Roughly one-third of people who suffer from kidney stones will experience symptomatic stone recurrence, a Mayo Clinic study finds. The 10-year study, "Symptomatic Stone Recurrence Following Ureteroscopy, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, and Shockwave Lithotripsy," monitored 333 patients for the reappearance of stones after their surgery in 1999?.
Regardless of treatment method, "approximately one-third of patients undergoing a surgical procedure for stones will experience a recurrence. Patients with a previous history of stones, prior stone surgery, and positive family history are at increased risk," says lead author Amy Krambeck M.D., a Mayo Clinic urologist.
Patients having shock wave lithotripsy were at highest risk of recurrence, while stones were least likely to return in those receiving percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Dr. Krambeck says patients and doctors should focus on treatment options most likely to leave the patient stone free with the least invasive and fewest surgical interventions.
Three studies support C-11 choline PET/CT scans as prostate cancer evaluation tool
Embargoed until 8 a.m. ET, Wednesday, May 23
Recent European studies have suggested that C-11 choline positron emission tomography/ computerized tomography scans may be used as an evaluation and therapeutic tool in prostate cancer. The results of three Mayo Clinic studies validate findings in Europe and expand the potential use of C-11 choline PET scans.
One study found that C-11 choline PET/CT scans can be used as an evaluation tool rather than multiple X-rays, but are not necessarily better. The two additional Mayo studies support the favorable claims made in recent medical literature about the use of PET scans to evaluate patients with recurrent prostate cancer. These findings are important because distinguishing localized disease recurrence from systemic recurrence is a vital step in optimizing treatment following primary treatment failure.
"Taken together, the three studies represent an important validation of the C-11 choline PET/CT scan as an evaluation tool for patients with prostate cancer," says Jeffrey Karnes, M.D., senior author of all three papers. "We believe the use of these scans can improve the evaluation and treatment of this common form of cancer, while potentially reducing the cost of delivering the best possible care."
Positron emission tomography is an imaging test that uses a small amount of radioactive material to reveal how tissues and organs are functioning. A C-11 choline PET scan involves the injection into a vein of a small amount of C-11 choline, a radioactive form of the vitamin choline. Clinicians then use a scanner and computer to make detailed pictures of areas where the C-11 choline collects. Since cancer cells take up more C-11 choline than normal cells, the pictures can be used to find cancer in the body.
