Facebook planning to sell TV-style ads for US$2.5-million a day ...

Facebook Inc., seeking to break the long-held dominance of television over advertising budgets, plans to sell TV-style commercials on its site for as much as US$2.5 million a day, two people familiar with the matter said.

The world?s largest social-networking site, which has 1.15 billion members, expects to start offering 15-second spots to advertisers later this year, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the plans aren?t public.

The move would follow efforts by Facebook?s online rivals to capture ad dollars that have traditionally gone to TV networks. Google Inc. began funding original content channels on its YouTube video-sharing site in recent years, giving it a more curated venue for commercials. A year ago, AOL Inc. started HuffPost Live, a CNN-like video stream running five days a week.

With Facebook, the idea would be to capitalize on the millions of users who actively check the site on a daily basis, including during the prime-time hours coveted by television advertisers. As of last quarter, 61% of Facebook members were using the site daily ? a number that has risen despite management predictions that it would decline.

?Every night, 88 million to 100 million people are actively using Facebook during prime-time TV hours in the United States alone,? Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said last week on a conference call to discuss second-quarter results.

Elisabeth Diana, a spokeswoman for Menlo Park, California- based Facebook, declined to comment on its advertising plan.

TV Opportunity

While the social network already allows advertisers to upload videos to their Facebook page and then broadcast them into a user?s news feed, the new service would let marketers buy their way directly into a person?s feed with a 15-second pitch, according to the people. That?s typically the minimum length of a television commercial.

The commercials will initially be sold on a full-day basis and can only be targeted to users based on age and gender, according to the people. Facebook members won?t see a spot more than three times in a given day, the people said. Depending on how large an audience an advertiser plans to reach, the ads will range in price from US$1 million to about US$2.5 million a day, according to the people.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who has been working with global marketing head Carolyn Everson on the video ad service, pushed back the start date at least twice, wanting to make sure Facebook?s user experience won?t be tainted by the ads, according to the people. Zuckerberg wants high-definition video and easy-to-use playback features, the people said.

Advertising Edge

Even with the growth of Internet traffic, television remains the undisputed king of the ad world. Advertisers plan to spend almost twice as much on television as on digital media this year, according to ZenithOptimedia, a research unit of Publicis Groupe SA. Internet ads are expected to reach US$36.2 billion, or 22% of all media purchases, while TV advertising will garner US$63.9 billion, or 38%.

Facebook?s move also would step up competition with social- networking rival Twitter Inc., which has been courting TV advertisers in its bid to reach US$1 billion in sales by 2014. The microblogging site earlier this month expanded a service that markets direct promotions to viewers who tweet about shows they?re watching on television.

Nielsen, the dominant firm for measuring TV ratings, started working with Facebook three years ago on an effort to count Internet viewership the same way it does with television. Nielsen relies on Facebook?s user data to create ratings measurements for online content, whether it?s an ad or a TV show streamed over the Internet.

Measurement Challenge

Silicon Valley companies have had difficulty luring away ad dollars from television networks because of a lack of a single measurement system that compares TV audiences directly to Internet audiences. Figures from measurement companies such as ComScore Inc. are difficult to compare against ratings from Nielsen.

Facebook sees the Nielsen partnership as a boon in its effort to sell more video advertising, an executive familiar with the plans said. Advertisers will be willing to spend more if they?re able to present comparable Nielsen ratings figures, the person said.

Republican donors send letter to GOP: ?Take action? on immigration

Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, who started a political action committee, Republicans for Immigration Reform, organized more than 100 business leaders, who sent a letter today to Republican members of Congress urging for immigration reform with a path to legalization.

?Immigrants are often entrepreneurial, family-minded, and guided by faith. ?These are Republican values,? says the letter, according to the New York Times.???These are Republican values.? The GOP donors urge Congress to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants, provide a way for U.S. companies to hire the workers they need while making it ?impossible? to hire undocumented workers, and to secure the border.

?Doing nothing is de facto amnesty,? the influential Republican donors say.

?What tends to happen during the month of August is that members go home and they go to town hall meetings and they check up on their offices in terms of phone calls and letters, and that?s where they get bombarded,? said Gutierrez in an interview. ??So Republicans who are for immigration reform ? and I believe there are many ? we need to make our voice known in August.?

The donors who signed the letter include Republicans such as Karl Rove, former Vice President Dan Quayle, and business leaders such as the founder of Staples, Tom Stemberg.

Gutierrez, who was an influential Republican under the Romney campaign but went on to criticize the party?s rhetoric and stance on immigration, recently wrote an opinion piece on The Hill about the GOP need to support reform.

?And as an immigrant and proud lifelong Republican who came to America in search of opportunity, I can tell you that the only things perhaps more outdated than our immigration system, are the nonsensical?and misguided statements espoused by some extremist elements of my own party,? wrote Gutierrez?recently.

Immigration advocates are putting pressure on House leaders, though it is expected that the House will not vote on any immigration bills until they come back from summer break ? meaning votes possibly in September or October.

Times Union Center bidding on three NCAA Division I tournaments

Donna Abbott-Vlahos

The Times Union Center has hosted NCAA men?s basketball and wrestling championship tournaments in various years since the arena opened in 1990, but never women?s basketball or women?s volleyball.

The Times Union Center could host up to three NCAA Division I championship tournaments starting in 2015 -- games that would not require expanding the sports arena at an estimated cost of $6 million to $11 million.

The arena?s general manager, Bob Belber, said bids will be submitted to the NCAA to host regional championship tournaments for women?s basketball, women?s volleyball, and men?s ice hockey from 2015 to 2018.

Belber is working with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Siena College on the women?s basketball and volleyball bids. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College are teaming up with the arena on the hockey bid.

The bids are due Sept. 16. The NCAA will announce the winning sites in December.

The games, if awarded, are expected to draw thousands of fans to the county-owned arena for two-day tournaments in March and December of those years, and help fill local bars, restaurants and hotels.

?The reality is if you bring in, for example, the regional women?s basketball tournament my guess is we?ll probably have close to 65 to 70 percent of the people who attend the event come from outside this market, and fill every hotel in a 50-mile radius,? Belber said.

The Times Union Center last hosted an NCAA Division I tournament in 2010, when the men?s ice hockey East Regional was played there.

The arena has also hosted NCAA men?s basketball and wrestling championship tournaments in various years since the arena opened in 1990, but never women?s basketball or women?s volleyball.

?These championships that we?re bidding on we feel can bring in huge crowds,? Belber said. ?We can generate not just enough to cover expenses but to provide the NCAA with the net revenues they?re looking for.?

On Saturday, Jack McInerney was in Vancouver playing forward as the Philadelphia Union snagged a road win over the Whitecaps, 1-0.

On Sunday, McInerney was in Chicago on the sidelines and watched the U.S. Men's National Team defeat Panama, 1-0, to win the Gold Cup championship.

On Wednesday, McInerney will be in Kansas City to participate in his first Major League Soccer All-Star Game.

The Union striker was added to the roster on Sunday after New York Red Bulls forward Tim Cahill had to bow out. In 19 games this season, McInerney has 10 goals and is in fourth place in the Golden Boot race.

He missed three games this month after a call-up to the USMNT, but while he was on the bench for the three pool play games he did not make an appearance. He was released from the team after the pool play round, but was invited back with other players that were released by coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the final.

The MLS All-Stars will take on AS Roma at 9 p.m. He is the fifth Union player to be selected to the All-Star game in the team's four-year history.

Intel, Microsoft, Oracle Defend Apple as iPhone 4 Ban Looms

Some of the biggest names in technology are coming to Apple's aid as it faces a ban by the International Trade Commission (ITC) of the iPhone 4. Intel, Microsoft and Oracle are now coming to Apple's defense, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, BSA ? a trade group that represents the three companies ? has joined Apple in asking President Obama to stop the ban, which takes effect Aug. 4. The group says that the use of essential industry patents to ban products shouldn't be allowed except under unusual circumstances.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have also expressed similar concerns.

In June, the ITC ruled that the AT&T versions of Apple's iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G all infringed on patents owned by Samsung. Of the three devices, the iPhone 4 is the only handset that remains on sale around the world.

The Verizon iPhone 4 is not included in the ban.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman is said to be conducting a careful and balanced review process of the ITC decision as established by law and with equal opportunity to consider all perspectives related to the case.

A U.S. president has not intervened in an ITC ban since President Reagan in 1987.

Egypt's military and Muslim Brotherhood in violent showdown (+video)

Egypt's health ministry says at least 65 are dead in violent clashes Saturday between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. The violence indicates a willingness by police to use firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests.

Security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted president early Saturday, killing at least 65 protesters, the Health Ministry said, in the country's bloodiest incidence of violence since the military deposed Mohammed Morsi.

At a makeshift hospital near the site of the battles in eastern Cairo, doctors struggled to cope with the flood of dozens of wounded.

The extent of the carnage underlined the willingness of police to unleash deadly firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests demanding the reinstatement of Morsi. Military-backed authorities are feeling emboldened after millions turned out for nationwide rallies Friday called by the army chief in support of a tough hand against what he called "terrorism."

Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, a longtime pro-democracy campaigner who backed the military's ouster of Morsi, raised one of the few notes of criticism of the bloodshed in the new military-backed leadership.

"I highly condemn the excessive use of force and the fall of victims," he wrote in a tweet, though he did not directly place blame for the use of force. He added that he is "working very hard and in all directions to end this confrontation in a peaceful manner."

The bloodshed also pointed to the Islamists' readiness to challenge the security forces as Morsi's supporters try to win over public support for their cause.

The fighting, which began before dawn and stretched out over several hours, was the deadliest bouts of violence since the military ousted Morsi on July 3 in the wake of massive protests demanding his removal. Soon after Morsi's fall, more than 50 of his supporters were killed in a similar outbreak of violence outside a headquarters of the Republican Guard.

A leading figure of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed el-Beltagy, blamed the violence on army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's call for rallies on Friday.

"This is the mandate el-Sissi took last night ? to commit massacres and bloodshed against peaceful protesters denouncing the military coup," el-Beltagy said in a statement on his Facebook page.

The clashes began after a crowd of Morsi supporters late Friday moved out of their main sit-in camp where they have been located for nearly three weeks, in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque.

Some of them installed themselves on a nearby major boulevard, blocking traffic. They began to set up tents there, planning to stay there at least three days, said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Brotherhood spokesman. Others went up on a nearby highway overpass, he told The Associated Press.

Police moved in and fired tear gas to break up the crowds at around 2 a.m., and protesters responded with volleys of stones in battles near a memorial to former President Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981.

Gunshots also rang out, seemingly from both sides, said one witness, Mosa'ab Elshamy, a freelance photographer, though he could not tell who started firing.

Armed residents of the area also joined the police side, and there were also plainclothes police carrying handguns, he said. The security forces "felt a bit more unrestrained than other times," said Elshamy, who has extensively covered other clashes with police the past two years. "It was clear they had no restraints."

Ragab Nayel Ali, one of the pro-Morsi protesters, said security forces fired first with tear gas and birdshot. "Protesters replied by hurling rocks and started building walls," said Ali, who was injured in an accident as he ferried wounded on his motorcycle from the fighting to a field hospital.

At the makeshift clinic set up at the Rabaah al-Adawiya encampment, men shouted "God is great," and women wailed as bodies were loaded into ambulances to be taken for examination at hospitals. Bodies of more than a dozen men lay on the blood-splattered floor with white sheets over them.

"They aimed at killing the people. They aimed the head and the neck," said Ahmed Abdullah, a doctor at the field clinic, as he wiped tears from his eyes.

A medical official at a nearby hospital said many of those killed had bullet wounds at chest level or higher. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb said that at least 65 people were killed in the violence. Nine more were killed in clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria since Friday, he said. Nationwide, nearly 750 people were wounded in various incidents of violence, 270 of them in the Cairo bloodshed, he said.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Ahmed Aref, told reporters that 66 were killed in the Cairo violence and another 61 were "clinically dead." He did not further explain their condition, but his comments suggested the official toll could go higher.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees the police force, said in a statement that residents in the district began clashing with the pro-Morsi marchers when their protest blocked a major artery. The ministry said police who intervened were trying to break up the two sides by firing tear gas.

Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief and presidential candidate who lost to Morsi last year, called on the government to make clear what happened.

"Yesterday, masses went out to the streets against terrorism, violence and bloodshed. Do not forget that," the secular-leaning Moussa said in a statement.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Hani Abdel-Latif said 14 policemen and 37 army troops were wounded in the violence. He said that two of the policemen had gunshot wounds to the head. He claimed that the police only used tear gas against the protesters.

He warned against "following calls for non-peaceful protests."

It was not clear how troops could have been wounded in the fighting, since the army did not appear to be involved in the fighting. Elshamy said troops' only involvement he saw was that some fired into the air at one point, causing both police and protesters to back up for a short time.

Interim President Adly Mansour told the private TV station al-Hayat that his government seeks to include everyone, but it will not accept lawlessness, blocked roads and attacks on state institutions.

"I can't negotiate with anyone who has committed a crime. But those who were duped or those who want to belong to Egyptian society, we welcome them," he said. But he added: "The state must interfere (against lawlessness) firmly."

The violence is certain to only further deepen the divides over the military coup that ended Morsi's one year in office. Millions joined four days of protests that began June 30 demanding Morsi be removed, accusing him of empowering his Brotherhood and failing to resolve the country's problems.

Many of Morsi's opponents, including liberals, leftists and moderate Muslim, secular and Christian Egyptians, have now enthusiastically embraced the military after el-Sissi's removal of Morsi. The military-backed interim leadership has pushed a fast-track transition plan to return to a democratically elected government by early next year.

Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, reject the new political order, and say the military illegally ousted the country's first democratically elected leader. They have kept up their sit-in and held near daily rallies elsewhere in the capital to demand Morsi be reinstated.

While the main sit-in has been peaceful, protests elsewhere have repeatedly turned violent, and some 180 people have been killed in clashes nationwide. Each side has accused the other of sparking clashes.

El-Sissi called for Friday's mass rallies to give the military a mandate to fight "violence and terrorism," raising speculation that he may be planning a crackdown against the pro-Morsi rallies.

Giant crowds responded to his call Friday, packing main squares in cities around the country, voicing support for a tough hand against Islamists. Morsi supporters also held large rallies Friday, although smaller than those of the pro-military camp.

The rival demonstrations erupted into violence in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria that left eight dead.

More than 100 Morsi supporters had taken refuge in a central mosque in Alexandria, and held 17 of their rivals hostage overnight inside to try and fend off a security siege of the building. A security official said the hostages were freed and those inside the mosque arrested. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media

Also on Friday, authorities announced that Morsi was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Morsi has been held incommunicado since being taken into military custody on July 3.

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber says their strategy paid off well in Hungary ? Formula 1 news

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that their strategy paid off well in the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix as he managed to secure an impressive fourth place finish despite struggling in the qualifying.

Webber could only secure 10th grid slot for the Hungarian GP as he faced some problems during the qualifying. Nevertheless, he managed to make the most out of his car in the race and successfully came 4th after following a commendable strategy prepared by his team.

The Australian driver said that he felt really good in the first lap of the race on the medium compound tyres. Moreover, he admired the efforts of his team for providing him a competent car and developing the right tyre strategy for the preceding race.

?I think we had the right strategy,? he said. ?There was a lot of pressure on the first lap to be the leading guy on the prime [medium compound tyre]. The start was okay and the first sector was very good. Then we just settled in, I had a pretty tricky car in the first three or four laps and then we just got our head down.?

Even though, he said that he could have achieved a little bit more in the previous race, he is contented over his result. In addition, he stated that he didn?t make any mistakes and tried his best to perform well for his team in Hungary.

?We could have had a little bit more, but not a huge amount more. The strategy was pretty solid. I didn't make many mistakes and I tried to stay out as long as I could,? he added.

Besides, he said that he is positively looking forward to keep up the level of his performance in the approaching races in order to make his mark stronger in the championship fight.

Currently, the Aussie is standing at 5th place in the drivers? championship with 105 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Nico Rosberg and behind his main rival, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

It will be exciting to see how he performs in the season ahead. ?

Pennsylvania lawmakers pass budget but not pension reform

By Michael Sadowski

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania- (Reuters) - Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a nearly $28.4 billion budget for fiscal 2014, which starts on Monday, but lawmakers declined to take action Sunday on a controversial public pension bill until fall.

The inaction on Corbett's plan to reduce the state's $47 billion-and-growing public pension shortfall is expected to lead to credit rating downgrades and higher borrowing costs.

A report by Moody's Investors Service last week ranked Pennsylvania the eighth-worst among all U.S. states as measured by pension liabilities to revenues, while the so-called yield spread over triple-A-rated bonds paid on Pennsylvania bonds rose about a third since January.

Moody's rates Pennsylvania at Aa2 with a stable outlook. Fitch Ratings said in April that it would decide whether to cut its AA-plus rating on Pennsylvania after reviewing the budget enacted for fiscal 2014.

The legislature also did not pass Corbett's proposals to privatize state-run liquor stores and hike taxes and fees to fund a $2 billion transportation package, two items that lawmakers are also expected to reconsider in the fall.

For Corbett, a Republican up for re-election in 2014 who has trailed potential Democratic challengers in recent polls, the apparent failure of his three-pronged agenda in a legislature led by his own party is a test of his leadership.

"We made progress on all these things. Things are grinding ahead, just couldn't pull them all together," House Speaker Sam Smith told the Pennsylvania Independent.

The 111-92 budget vote in the Pennsylvania House ended three hours before the beginning of the new fiscal year.

House Majority Leader Mike Turzai called it a "compassionate budget" that was responsible to both taxpayers and those who receive state funding.

The budget for fiscal 2014 is a 2.3 percent, or $645 million, increase over the current year's spending plan. It was also $64 million less than Corbett proposed in February.
