Charges expected for Colorado shooting suspect

Alleged Colorado cinema gunman James Holmes will be back in court later today, this time to learn how many criminal charges he'll be facing.

Holmes, 24, is accused of blasting his way through a packed movie house during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora.

Twelve victims died in the attack, 58 others were wounded. The rampage is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

Holmes was clad in tactical gear and possessed four guns and a stockpile of ammo when he surrendered to officers behind the cinema. He did not resist arrest, but investigators have since described the former neuroscience doctoral student as uncooperative.

The suspect seemed dazed and groggy when he appeared in court three days after the movie massacre. His hair was dyed a cartoonish orange-red. He did not speak.

Cameras will not be allowed at Monday's hearing, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET. Yahoo! News will be in the courtroom.

Holmes has been held since July 20 on suspicion of murder, but prosecutors will likely charge him with numerous counts of murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. A decision to seek the death penalty could be months away.

Police say Holmes legally purchased the guns in May and June, but allegedly began stockpiling ammo and other gear four months ago.

"This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity," Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver, told the Associated Press.

At Monday's hearing, attorneys are also expected to argue a defense motion to find out who leaked information to the news media about a package the former grad student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mail room of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist, the Associated Press reported.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Experts say there are two levels of insanity defenses. Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, like Jared Loughner, who killed six people when he shot Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he told the Associated Press, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

Smith III, an educational psychologist at Michigan State University who has studied math education, has found that "mathematical reasoning in workplaces differs markedly from the algorithms taught in school." Even in jobs that rely on so-called STEM credentials -- science, technology, engineering, math -- considerable training occurs after hiring, including the kinds of computations that will be required. Toyota, for example, recently chose to locate a plant in a remote Mississippi county, even though its schools are far from stellar. It works with a nearby community college, which has tailored classes in "machine tool mathematics."?

That sort of collaboration has long undergirded German apprenticeship programs. I fully concur that high-tech knowledge is needed to sustain an advanced industrial economy. But we're deluding ourselves if we believe the solution is largely academic.

A skeptic might argue that, even if our current mathematics education discourages large numbers of students, math itself isn't to blame. Isn't this discipline a critical part of education, providing quantitative tools and honing conceptual abilities that are indispensable -- especially in our high tech age? In fact, we hear it argued that we have a shortage of graduates with STEM credentials.

Of course, people should learn basic numerical skills: decimals, ratios and estimating, sharpened by a good grounding in arithmetic. But a definitive analysis by the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce forecasts that in the decade ahead a mere 5 percent of entry-level workers will need to be proficient in algebra or above. And if there is a shortage of STEM graduates, an equally crucial issue is how many available positions there are for men and women with these skills. A January 2012 analysis from the Georgetown center found 7.5 percent unemployment for engineering graduates and 8.2 percent among computer scientists.

1. Denial ? Life is good, I my job is stable, I?m making all my payments and I am not in default of anything. ?Really? ?Take a look around. ?How any people do you know have retired from the same job they started at age 25? ?What would happen to your finances if you suddenly got sick and could not work? ?Or your employer decides to close up shop and move production overseas? ?Have you taken any time to think about the future and what it might contain? ?What does retirement look like? ?What contingency plans do you have if your situation suddenly goes very wrong? ?Bankruptcy is never a first choice, but it may be the only choice when you fail to plan.
2. Liabilities exceed assets. ?Do this simple exercise: ?Write down a list of everything you owe. ?Not what you have to pay every month such as utilities and food, but what you OWE and who you owe it to. ?Now write down a list a everything you own. ?You don;t have to get detailed, but a house, cares, bank accounts, general furniture and other possessions should be relatively easy. ?Now put a value of what you might be able to get for those items if you had to suddenly sell them. ?Not what you paid for them, but what you could reasonably expect to get if you threw everything in the driveway and had a tag sale. ?Put aside sentimental blue, put aside the ?investment? value ? what is your stuff really worth? ?Now subtract the total of your debt from your assets. ?Is that a negative number? ?For 95% of all U.S. residents, it is. ?Bankruptcy might help you dump some of those debts while allowing you to keep some of those assets. ?It can improve your bottom line.
3. Savings are non-existent. ?When looking at the assets/liabilities review outlined in step 2 above, was a savings account part of your asset picture? ?Is there room in your budget determined in step 3 above for some savings plan? ?Part of the way to avoid denying that there will ever be a problem is planning for one to happen. ?Flat tires or illness can never be expected, but you can plan for them. ?If you have a savings plan to cover the cost of that halt tire replacement or the unexpected doctor bill or prescription drug, your budget can absorb the unexpected expense. ?Some experts recommend starting with a $1,000 savings account, others recommend saving at least three months of income for the unexpected loss of a job. ?If your budget does not allow for a savings plan, then a bankruptcy may change your expenses enough to start one.
5. Look at your history. ?Once you start to change your thinking about your finances, it is sometimes hard to get away from kicking yourself. ?Remember, this is not about blame. ?It is about taking the blinders off and looking at reality. ?You bought your home for $100,000 ten years ago and now you owe $200,000 on it. ?While it is important to understand that you spent $10,000 a year more than you earned by taking money out of your home, don?t let it drag you down. ?Instead look at how you are going to pay off your 30 year mortgage now that you are 40 years old before you reach 70. ?Who wants to be paying a mortgage when you are retired? ?Maybe you don;t care, but then it is important to look at your mortgage payment as ask yourself whether you would pay that amount in rent for that home. ?Since you are never going to pay off the loan, that is what you are effectively doing. ?Only by looking backward can you charge the behavior you need to succeed going forward. ?Bankruptcy is a way of recognizing the mistakes you have made in the past, accepting them and making the changes you need so you don?t continue repeating them. ?Insanity is sometimes defined as repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result.

Capital rules may hinder Nigerian banks' Africa growth

LAGOS (Reuters) - New capital rules may hinder Nigerian banks' expansion plans, as the central bank limits how financial institutions use local funds abroad and other African countries tighten requirements for foreign lenders.

Zambia became the latest African country to hike capital requirements for foreign banks to $100 million from $2 million this year, after Ghana and Kenya, as it tries to insulate its banking sector from the effects of a weak global economy.

With the capital hikes, Nigeria followed with a directive restricting its lenders from recapitalising offshore units from funds sourced at home, in order to avoid capital flight and save a weak naira which has lost 3 percent since April.

Nigeria's UBA on Friday said it will turn its Zambian unit into a local bank and consider a public issue of shares to meet new capital rules in Africa's top copper producer.

"We are already evaluating a number of possible options that will see UBA Zambia become a local bank in that country," said Kayode Fadahunsi, investor relations director, adding that UBA will require participation from Zambian investors.

Analysts said the measures meant that lenders in Africa's second-biggest economy may have to forgo their ambitions of establishing Nigeria as a pan-African banking hub on the continent, or look for capital elsewhere but not at home.

EXPANSION DREAM

"If all else fails, then UBA or whoever it is, will have to give up the African expansion dream in that specific country," said Bunmi Asaolu, head of research at FBN Capital, adding that UBA had operations in 18 African nations, including Zambia.

The move could affect almost all 21 lenders in Nigeria but those with the highest number of offshore units - UBA and Access Bank with a presence in nine African countries - will feel the pressure most, analysts say.

Adesoji Solanke, banking analyst at Renaissance Capital, said the new rules could also affect First Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank, given their ambition to expand offshore.

"It poses a clear risk to future external growth prospects for Nigerian banks offshore," Rencap's Solanke said, adding that Access Bank was working on selling some of its offshore units.

UBA's Fadahunsi said the bank already had the required $20 million necessary to become a local bank and that it had submitted a proposal to Zambia's central bank on how it intended to recapitalise the unit before a December deadline.

It may have to sell up to 50 percent of its shares in UBA Zambia to become a local bank, analysts say.

Nigeria's central bank has said it wants to enforce better supervision of banks and their subsidiaries in order to avoid a repeat of the events that led to a $4 billion bailout of nine undercapitalised lenders in 2009.

It has scrapped the universal banking model and asked local lenders to sell off speculative capital market businesses and focus on core lending or form a holding company, if they wish to carry on with asset management, including owning offshore units.

Tendulkar urges India squad to embrace pressure

Cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar has simple advice to offer India's medal hopefuls at the London Olympics -- embrace pressure, don't fight it.

The record-breaking batsman, who has himself shouldered the burden of expectations from cricket-crazy fans for more than two decades, said top sportspersons needed to get used to the pressure.

"There is no doubt pressure will be your continuous companion," the 39-year-old was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

"If you fight that, it gets difficult. You have to just understand your body and mind and embrace it.

"It is easier said than done, but I think, once they enter the playing area, they will all forget about the pressure. They would just want to focus on a good performance."

India, a perennial underachiever at the Olympics given its population, is hopeful of a better showing at the Games having sent its largest ever contingent to London.

At the Beijing Olympics India won just three medals -- shooter Abhinav Bindra picked up the country's first individual gold medal, and wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Singh won bronze medals.

But Tendulkar shied away from predicting India's medals tally at London and urged the country's Olympic squad to just give their best and not worry about the results.

"I am not the kind of person who sets targets like that," he said. "The entire world is there to win and there is going to be only one winner. It's not going to be easy, but yes, we have winners in our contingent.

"I would want to let our entire Indian squad know that we all are behind them. Whether you are successful or not, your effort will matter to us and for that you will always be heroes.

"It is the commitment that matters. As long as the heart says ?we have given our best' we will be proud of you. It is about the hard work they have put in, the sacrifices they have made."

Tendulkar, who made his debut in 1989, is the leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket and has an unprecedented 100 international centuries to his credit.

Hyundai recalls some SUVs, sedans for problems with air bags

DETROIT (AP) ? Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling some Santa Fe SUVs and Sonata sedans because of problems with their air bags.

The Santa Fe recall involves nearly 200,000 vehicles in the 2007 to 2009 model years. Hyundai dealers will reprogram the front passenger air bag sensors so they will accurately detect when a small adult is seated.

Hyundai said it received complaints from some adults under 130 pounds whose air bags didn't deploy. No injuries have been reported. The air bags were originally programmed not to go off to protect children.

The company is also recalling 22,500 Sonata sedans from the 2012 and 2013 model years because their side air bags could go off without warning.

Hyundai said it has received 16 complaints about the Sonata's air bags, but no injuries have been reported.

ATLANTA (AP) ? All of a sudden, biting into a fried chicken sandwich has become a political statement.

Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain known for putting faith ahead of profits by closing on Sundays, is standing firm in its opposition to gay marriage after touching off a furor earlier this month.

Gay rights groups have called for a boycott, the Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from kids' meals, and politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

Across the Bible Belt, where most of the 1,600 restaurants are situated, Christian conservatives have thrown their support behind the Atlanta-based company, promising to buy chicken sandwiches and waffle fries next week on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

The latest skirmish in the nation's culture wars began when Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press that the company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." In a later radio interview, he ratcheted up the rhetoric: "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'"

That fired up gay rights advocates, including a group that waged a campaign against the company in recent years by publicizing $3 million in contributions that the Cathy family foundation has made to conservative organizations such as the Family Research Council.

"This solidifies Chick-fil-A as being closely aligned with some of the most vicious anti-gay voices in the country," said Carlos Maza of Equality Matters.

A Chicago alderman vowed to block a Chick-fil-A proposed in his district, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported him, saying, "Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values." Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wrote in a letter to Cathy: "There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it."

In announcing it was pulling its toys, the Jim Henson company said it has "celebrated and embraced diversity for over 50 years." It directed its revenue from the Chick-fil-A toys to GLAAD, a leading gay rights organization.

On the other side of the debate, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared next Wednesday "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" to support a business "whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values." Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who like Huckabee ran for president as a darling of social conservatives, joined the cause along with religious leaders.

"As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to 'Eat Mor Chikin' and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A next Wednesday," the Rev. Billy Graham said in a statement, referring to the slogan in the company's ads, which feature cows urging people to eat poultry.

The Rev. Roger Oldham, spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention, said many Christians want to support businesses owned by fellow believers, and the loyalty intensifies "when Christians see a fellow Christian being persecuted."

"They will come out of the woodwork when a theologically based position is being politicized by individuals for their own purposes," he said.

The Cathy family has never hid its Southern Baptist faith. Since Dan Cathy's father, Truett, opened the first Chick-fil-A in 1967, the restaurants have been closed on Sundays, and the company refused to reconsider during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, sacrificing profits. It also boasts that the Chick-fil-A Bowl is the only college football bowl game with an invocation.

Chick-fil-A posted more than $4.1 billion in sales last year, most of it below the Mason-Dixon Line. Just 14 of its restaurants are in the six states and the District of Columbia where gay marriage is legal. Massachusetts has just two locations, both more than 10 miles from Boston. Illinois, which does not have same-sex marriage, has around a dozen, though only one in Chicago.

The company is well-positioned to come through the criticism relatively unscathed, even if it loses new markets in the North and elsewhere, University of Georgia marketing professor Sundar Bharadwaj said. He said that is because Chick-fil-A basically reflects the politics of its customers.

At a downtown Atlanta Chick-fil-A on Thursday, customers were divided over the company's stance.

"If you're a Christian, you believe in the Bible. The Bible says homosexuality is wrong. (Cathy's) absolutely right," Marci Troutman said over her breakfast.

Her business partner, Steve Timpson, said he chose not to eat at Chick-fil-A: "You've got to be more tolerant if you're going to operate in the wider market in this country."

Nearby, Dustin Keller offered another view of Cathy: "It's his opinion. He's entitled to it. I'm just here to eat."

Obama - GOP Holding Middle-Class Tax Cuts 'Hostage'

NEW ORLEANS - Just hours after the Senate voted to extend tax cuts for the middle class, President Obama accused House Republicans of holding the tax cuts "hostage" until the nation agrees to spend $1 trillion on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

Speaking to supporters at the House of Blues, the president praised the Senate for moving forward with his plan to extend the Bush-era tax rate for families earning less than $250,000 a year and to let the rate expire for higher earners.

"This is something I deeply believe in, because the middle class is still struggling, recovering from this recession. You don't need your taxes to go up and we could give you certainty right now," he said.

When it comes to House Republicans, however, the president said their desire to preserve the tax rate for all earners "makes no sense."

"If Congress doesn't act, the typical middle-class family is going to see their tax bill go up about $2,200. Small businesses will also see their taxes go up," he said. "But so far, they don't see it that way. Gov. Romney doesn't see it that way."

The president cast the dueling tax plans as indicative of the broader economic visions at stake in the election.

"They believe in top-down economics," he said of Republicans. "Their plan is to cut more taxes for the wealthy, cut more regulations on banks and corporations, cut more investments in things like education, job training, science, research - all with the thought that somehow that's going to help us create jobs. That's what Mitt Romney believes. That's what Washington Republicans believe."

"That's not what I believe. That's not what you believe. That's not what most Americans believe. We believe not in top-down economics; we believe in middle-class-out economics. We believe in bottom-up economics. That's what we're fighting for," he said.

The president spoke before about 400 supporters who'd paid at least $250 each to attend the event, one of two fundraisers Obama attended in the Big Easy tonight.

In shirt-sleeves and a loose tie, a relaxed Obama said it was good to be back in New Orleans.

"I've got to admit I was thinking about just blowing everything off and going and getting something to eat," he joked. "The next time I come down, drinks are on me."

Bursting blue termites spew toxic goo

One species of termite sends its older workers on suicide missions armed with explosive blue "backpacks."

When grabbed by another termite, a predator or a person with tweezers, these backpack-sporting termites, which the researchers call blue workers, rupture and spew a toxic, sticky substance, scientists have found.

The unfortunate workers from this species of tropical termite, Neocapritermes taracua, have two bluish spots visible on the backs of their abdomens. These spots contain crystals made of a copper-containing protein stored in two external "backpack" pouches, write the researchers.

The crystals react with the salivary gland secretions stored in their abdomens to create a droplet of toxic goo that can kill or paralyze worker termites from another species, Labiotermes labralis, an experiment revealed. [ Video of Exploding Suicide Termites ]

So-called white workers also have the salivary secretions but lack the blue crystals. These workers are less aggressive, slower to burst in battle and the substance they produce is not as effective against their enemies.

The researchers transplanted the crystals from blue workers onto white workers, and found the white workers became more deadly once they had the crystals.??

They also determined that the blue workers were older by measuring the length of the edge of the termites' mandibles. Termites chew on wood and as they age their mandibles wear down. The larger the blue crystals on a termite, the more blunt its mandibles, the researchers found.

Among social insects like termites, the practice of sending older workers into battle is common, researcher Yves Roisin of Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium said in a podcast interview released by the journal Science, where this research is detailed.

"(Among) such insects of course the individual doesn't really count or it counts by the work it can actually do for the colony, and when they are old and probably less efficient they are more likely to sacrifice themselves," Roisin said.

However, the blue workers' suicide gear is highly unusual in the world of insect warfare, because the combination of blue crystals and salivary secretions make it a two-component system, Roisin said, adding that it is also exceptional that one component (the crystals) is carried outside of the body.

So far, the researchers have seen this behavior in this species only, but they hope to see if its relatives do something similar, he said.

The research will appear in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

State of the Housing Market - Real Estate Blog - Homes.com

More than 71 million consumers used Homes.com to search for homes during the second quarter. That?s a three percent increase from the Q1 State of the Housing Market report. This data shows us that along with rising new-home sales, more Americans are searching homes for sale during the April, May and June months.

The report, an industry standard for insight into the current home-buying market, reveals the top searched cities in the second quarter are located in bustling cities with warm climates. Southern cities dominate the top ten list, with most cities considered to be family-friendly with unique attractions.

The top ten cities are determined by the number of unique searches on the site and include:

1. Orlando ? 352,907
2. Houston ? 332,789
3. Atlanta ? 285,630
4. Las Vegas ? 280,394
5. Charlotte ? 246,730
6. Miami ? 213,882
7. Baltimore ? 211,184
8. Dallas ? 185,133
9. Tampa ? 176,986
10. San Antonio ? 174,041

The data reveals homebuyers continue to search for homes in Southern locations. However, two new cities made the list in Q2 ? Dallas and Baltimore.

Orlando is yet again the most searched city with more than 350,000 queries on Homes.com. Homebuyers flock to this city that is most commonly known as a tourist destination. Its abundance of family-friendly activities and planned neighborhoods?along with lower housing market rates?makes for a great place to live.

Only 20,000 searches behind Orlando is Houston. The fourth most populous city in the country is known for the largest rodeo in the world. It is home to the second largest number of Fortune 500 company headquarters, ranking only behind New York City.

With more than 100 cities and neighborhoods searched throughout the country, this report is another indicator the housing market is continuing its rise in 2012.

US, Amnesty critical of Cuban dissident detentions

HAVANA (AP) ? Cuba was criticized by the U.S. government and Amnesty International on Wednesday over the brief detention of dozens of dissidents after they attended a prominent opposition leader's funeral.

A few hundred people had gathered at a Havana church the previous day to pay respects to Oswaldo Paya, who died Sunday in a car crash, when a scrum broke out outside between dissidents yelling "freedom!" and state security agents.

Police herded more than 40 people onto buses, according to noted dissident hunger-striker Guillermo Farinas. They were taken to police stations and released within hours.

Cuba, which considers members of the island's small dissident community to be "counterrevolutionaries" bent on undermining the government, has cleared its prisons of internationally recognized prisoners of conscience in recent years. Dissidents say authorities have since turned to brief detentions such as those seen Tuesday.

The short-term arrests "aim to produce physical and psychological wear and tear among the opposition," said Farinas, who like Paya is a past winner of the European Union's Sakharov human rights prize.

Dissidents accused police of rough treatment, but there were no reports of any serious injuries.

The White House said in a Wednesday statement that the detentions "provide a stark demonstration of the climate of repression in Cuba."

"We look forward to the day when the Cuban people can live in the free society Oswaldo Paya worked so hard to bring about throughout his lifetime," it read.

Human rights group Amnesty International also criticized the arrests.

"Tuesday's events follow the pattern of short-term detentions and imprisonments we've seen the Cuban authorities carry out time and again as a form of intimidation against dissidents and human rights activists," said Gerardo Ducos, Amnesty's Cuba researcher.

There was no word of the detentions in Cuban state media, which rarely mention dissidents except to accuse them of being paid stooges of the U.S. government. Island newspapers have reported Paya's death, but without mentioning his opposition activities.

A rental car carrying Paya, another Cuban dissident, and two Europeans crashed Sunday in the eastern province of Granma, killing Paya and the other Cuban.

State media said the accident happened when the driver of the vehicle lost control and hit a tree.

A member of the Spanish conservative ruling party's youth wing was apparently behind the wheel. Both he and a Swede belonging to a political youth organization suffered minor injuries. They made statements to police and were being assisted by officials from their respective embassies, but have not spoken to the news media.

There have been some conflicting accounts of the crash including speculation it could have been intentional, and dissidents demanded a transparent investigation.

"We will clear up and seek justice for the violent death of my father," daughter Rosa Maria Paya said Tuesday at the church.

Paya, 60, was a leading government opponent who in the late 1990s and early 2000s headed up the Varela Project, which gathered thousands of signatures calling for political and economic change.

DreamWorks buys Classic Media for $155 million

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) ? DreamWorks Animation SKG on Monday said it has agreed to buy Classic Media, custodian of a library of movies and TV series that includes "Casper the Friendly Ghost," ''Lassie," ''Rocky & Bullwinkle," and "The Lone Ranger."

Dreamworks Animation is paying $155 million in cash to Classic Media's owner, Boomerang Media Holdings. Boomerang was formed by private-equity firm GTCR and Eric Ellenbogen and John Engelman, who founded Classic Media in 2000.

"Classic Media brings a large and diverse collection of characters and branded assets that is extremely complementary to DreamWorks Animation's franchise business," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation.

Classic Media has about 80 employees and is based in New York. It had an operating profit of $19.2 million on $82.2 million in revenue in the year that ended Feb. 29.

Classic Media owns 450 movies and 6,100 episodes of TV shows, both animated and live action. They include Christmas classics "Frosty the Snowman," ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town."

It also owns a comic-book archive and the media rights to the "Golden Books" series of children's books.

DreamWorks Animation is based in Glendale, Calif. It's the home of franchises like "Shrek" and "Madagascar."

Its shares slipped 3 cents to $19.13 in morning trading as the broader markets fell sharply.
