Transplant group rejects lung rule changes

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The national organization that manages organ transplants has rejected emergency rule changes on lungs for children and voiced serious ethical and medical concerns about a recent ruling by a federal judge who questioned the existing system.

But the executive committee of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network voted Monday to have a special committee review issues that have been raised in the cases of a terminally ill 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. The two, both at a Philadelphia hospital, are seeking access to adult lungs.

The Monday teleconference was prompted by federal Judge Michael Baylson's ruling last week that Sarah Murnaghan and Javier Acosta should be eligible for lungs from adults as well as children. Existing rules treat patients under 12 years of age separately from older people.
