Building a Windows 8 Home Server: Managing User Accounts and ...

When configuring a home server, I?m usually indecisive about whether I set up my user accounts first, or my shared folders. We have to set up both and ensure we have appropriate permissions in place so users can read from, and write to our shared folders. To be honest, we can do these tasks in either order, but it?s marginally less time consuming for us to sort out the accounts first, which we?ll do in this chapter, then create our shared folders and access permissions ? which will follow in the next chapter.

One consideration for those of you reading with children is how you will protect their PC usage from the increasing amount of threats that exist out there in the world. Monitoring and filtering PC usage across Windows 8 computers on the network is helped by enhanced Family Safety tools which we?ll also look at in this chapter.

Create Your User Accounts

The bad news is that User Account management in Windows 8 is a bit of an unholy mess. We?ll be switching between Metro and the Desktop regularly over the next couple of chapters, and when it comes to sharing folders, it?s clear that we?re going to have to wait for Windows 9 before the process is as slick as it needs to be.

Anyway, enough complaining! For each of the accounts you wish to set up, work through the following steps. In the Metro Start Screen, open the Charms Bar and select the Search icon. Type in the word ?user? and click the Settings filter, and you should see a range of user related tasks.

You?ll see your own user account in there, and at the bottom of the page, a plus icon next to an Add a user command. Click it.
